May send help to Ghana

Fred Ezeh, Abuja

The Federal Government on Monday announced that three new countries have been added to its existing list of five high-risk countries with widespread community transmission of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The new additions include France, Spain and Germany, added to the five countries in the prior list: China, Japan, Iran, Italy and the Republic of Korea.

Minister of State for Health Dr Olurunimbe Mamaora, addressing a press conference in Abuja on Monday, explained that travellers from the eight countries would face minor inconveniences at points of entry, particularly airports, because they would be forced to undergo compulsory secondary screening at the point of entry, in addition to strong advise for self-isolation for 14 days on entry.

The Minister confirmed that, between the 7th and 15th of March, 48 people who met the case definition have been screened for COVID-19 in eight states of Edo, Lagos, Ogun, FCT, Yobe, Rivers, Kano and Enugu.

“47 tested negative and have been cleared. One was positive, which was the contact of the index case, and one result is pending. There is no death so far,” he said.

The Minister, however, reconfirmed that the index case has shown impressive clinical stability and might be discharged anytime in the week.

He commended the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for being responsible in their duty, particularly in coordinating national response activities.

Mamaora further disclosed that NCDC has developed guidance for mass gatherings.

“We have advised against any closures or cancellations for large events. However, organisers of such events must ensure that appropriate measures are in place such as temperature scanners, hand-washing facilities amongst others.

The Minister added that Nigeria might consider extending manpower help to Ghana which has had more cases of COVID-19 than Nigeria.

Can't we just close the borders for now?

Why do we still allow foreigners to enter the country after the Italian brought Covid-19 to Nigeria. The truth is that we don't have the medical capability to handle coronavirus outbreak and we are not even prepared for anything.

It's so ironic that FG could close border to food but not to coronavirus lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed

while other countries are making boss moves and banning them from flying in, Nigeria cant do that cos we would soon borrow from them, imagine if we ban Germany , what would happen to siemens power deal? or we ban China that owns the Chinese Exim bank that plans to loan us 17 billion USD out of the 22 Billion we hope to borrow

Ok

So when the federal govt started making people coming into the country last month to fill forms and have their temp checked at the point of entry, wailing ipob wailers club on NL were saying that is not enough, it's a waste of time. Buhari this and that...Blah blah blah.
Guess who's doing what Nigeria has been doing for many weeks now.....USA.

I'll admit I do not know the number of travelers we welcome from at-risk countries.

But screening is not as effective as shutting the doors. Most carriers who go on to infect others are asymptomatic.

Maybe other countries closing their borders would help us somewhat, since this government is too inane to apply common sense and shut the borders.

We're lucky we haven't discovered any community spread. That's amazing. The sensible thing would be to keep it that way by barring all incoming travel to anyone but Nigerian citizens and their family members (who would go in for mandatory self-isolation) for at least the next 6 weeks.

Because if COVID-19 starts spreading, they'd quickly close the same borders they don't want to close now. So why not be proactive for once!

Well-done. The Nigeria we were insulting have been doing an amazing job in regards with the outbreak of the virus.

At the port of entry in every airport in Nigeria, a compulsory check and personal information sheet are provided, biometric etc. Kudus

While most of the Europe, there are no such in place. Tell me why the virus won't spread.

You enter and comot free, all in the name of freedom of movement or data privacy.

Well done to everyone out there at the airport.

Most of the people you see coming from those countries at this time are actually Nigerians. You agree that you can't shut the door against your own people. The measure put in place, I trust, would help prevent against the transfer of the virus in the country.
