The NCDC has warned Nigerians about fake
preventive measures circulating online about
the coronavirus.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control
(NCDC) has warned Nigerians against using
unverified and unorthodox means to attempt
to prevent or cure coronavirus (COVID-19)
infection.

With a cure for the virus yet to be found, many
people across the world have been resorting to
self-help in a bid to prevent infection.

For weeks since the disease has ravaged the
world, authorities have had to battle against
fake news about purported prevention tips
peddled by different sources from all corners of
the world.

In a tweet posted on Tuesday, March 31, 2020,
the NCDC rubbished some of these tips, warning
Nigerians to not cause further harm to
themselves in the process.

The agency said preventive measures such as
drinking palm oil, drinking hot lemon, eating
garlic and ginger, gargling warm water and salt,
or using special oils are all useless against the
disease.

The NCDC noted that spraying of water or
Dettol, an antiseptic and disinfectant, all over
the body also does not prevent or cure the
virus.

How do people come up with these ideas sef? No basis whatsoever to back it, yet people buy it so easily. I just read on one thread that someone bathes with petrol to prevent the disease. My pipo, which way na??

All self medications people are engaging in, even before any trace of the virus in their community, is very alarming. Thought it will end with chloroquine now it's local preventives.

May God enlighten us all in this country.

They relieve symptoms, I doubt people do it as a cure.

Nigerians need to be more logical in how they approach these matters, look into why people are doing something, instead of assuming the reason. And dont rush to type publicly without having a team of consultants go over it first.

We tend to have emotional approaches to (public) issues that require a utilitarian basis.

And if folks in Nigeria have been widely observed treating their symptoms as noted by the NSDC, that implies a public health emergency, as in unreported and widespread cases.

You are right! Things like this require accurate confirmation before they're publicized. Biochemistry exists for a reason, we need to understand how something works first before establishing its effectiveness. That's why clinical trials are done first using animals and other subjects. People would just receive these texts and just send them without even going through. Na God dey help person, but that one no mean say make person embrace ignorance.

Many countries are sanitizing their environments with industrial sanitizers, NSDC could advise Nigerians to disinfect their surroundings rather than just castigating them for their use of dettol.

I think we ought to know these things by now.

The NCDC and their nairaland agents should not consider my criticism negatively or take it personal, look at it as opportunity for improvement.

See this NCDC.Please, do a reasonable home remedy. Who says we cannot find a cure to covid-19. Must we depend on this European folk before we do something tangible? Besides, why will people not going into self medication when NCDC choice of testing are bias. no ventilator for the poor.

Nigerians believe whispers and rumours. And they do it most when it is coming from one of the tribesmen or clique.

I remember the Ebola episode and how even riverine Ijaw people who had seen the firsthand the danger of salty water were running to use salty water for Ebola.

They can easily loose their thinking cap when stúpid info comes as whispers.

The use of Ginger, Garlic, chocolate, lemon, citrus and nuts etc are just immune boosting food. They cannot cure Coronavirus but boost your chances of survival. Nigerians ehn.
