The Reason Countries Are Evacuating/repatriating Their Citizens From Nigeria by Onyocha: 10:38am On Apr 06, 2020
I found it necessary to create this thread out of necessity due to the ignorance of some or many people and also, the sensationalization of media reports surrounding the countries repatriating their citizens out of Nigeria, as it is also being done elsewhere around the world.

Note that these countries are only providing planes and opening their airports to let their citizens return home. The citizens bear the cost of travel and decision to leave or not to. So these are not obligatory evacuations based on travel advisory or travel warning. The citizens will bear the cost of travel. The government will only ensure airports give access for these flights tagged "emergency" (due to government to government interventions) under strict measures such as testing and social distancing.

I made the below post in the other thread on Egypt and Lebanon sending planes to 'evacuate' their citizens from Nigeria. I find it necessary to create this thread to inform and hightlight the fact that these so called evacuations, are in fact repatriations, for people who otherwise in normal times are frequent travellers or have some urgent reasons to return home. These trips may not entirely be related to the coronavirus pandemic and have more to do with the fact that airports are closed around the world and some people are either stranded or may want to return home for any reason at all.

It doesnt mean all citizens of those countries are leaving. I hope Seun and Lalasticlala would do the needed and take this thread to the front page. And here is an example of this fact with Americans in Nepal:

The U.S. Embassy in Nepal estimates that 3,000 to 4,000 Americans are still in the country but says not all of them are seeking to leave. Plans for future flights to evacuate more of the Americans were unclear."

The US is not forcing its citizens to leave other countries:

"We are not forcing anybody. We left the choice to them. If they think that it would be better for them to go back, they will go, and if they think that remaining in Bangladesh will be better for them they can stay,” the Embassy officials said when asked whether going to the US, now considered as the epicenter of corona, would be a wise decision."

Lebanon for instance charged its citizens wanting to leave from Lagos and Abidjan $1,800 for flight ticket, with the national carrier - Middle East Airlines. This is a one way ticket for $1,800. Normally, it is not up to $400 for a one way flight from Lagos to Beirut. The government will take special measures like providing doctors onboard, providing quarantine facilities and testing upon arrival etc.

Even mighty USA arranged Qatar Airways to repatriate Americans at the cost of their citizens and not on government expense:

If these were obligatory evacuations, the governments of other countries would have provided free and compulsory flights back home.

So there is no alarm that these repatriations indicate the virus is going to spread in Nigeria. The right and timely measures need to be followed and things won't get out of hands. There is no need to be alarmist and claim these evacuations or rather, repatriations are done because other countries have info of something sinister about happening in Nigeria. I dont think there is any such thing. These are just needed measures to fill the vacuum left for travellers by the shutdown of airports around the world.

Onyocha:
First of all, many people are ignorant surrounding the purpose of these so called evacuations.

Secondly, the media is sensationalizing the reports.

Most of these countries have shut down their own airports. That means many of their citizens who are aboard, not necessarily resident abroad, may want to return home. They are trapped in other countries, like Nigeria or they have urgency to return home. For example, France could evacuate or repatriate French people who want to leave the USA, and the US may evacuate or repatriate Americans who want to leave France. There is no case of "they know what we dont know of something sinister about to happen in Nigeria ". When airports were not closed, people travelling in and out of Nigeria was routine. If their home countries' airports are closed, then how do they return? Their governments are arranging these flights to assist their people, who may want to return home to do that. It doesnt mean they are obliged to leave or all of them are leaving.

It doesnt mean that the virus is getting out of hand in Nigeria.

It doesnt mean also all citizens of the countries offering flights to their citizens are leaving.

It doesnt mean the coronavirus situation is better in those countries than in Nigeria.

It simply has to do with the fact that airports around the world have been shut down and there are citizens of other countries who may want to return home.

Further proof that passengers are stranded and need special flights to move back to their countries. Here is neighbouring Bahrain moving its citizens out of Qatar:

"Qatar welcomes Bahrain move to evacuate citizens stuck in Doha"

Thirty-one Bahrainis landed in Qatar on Friday but were left stranded, as Manama does not allow direct flights to Doha.

The decay in our healthcare system exists too in most third world countries.

But that's not the reason.

These countries are are also evacuating from other countries

Don't be intelligent by half because even Nigeria is also ready to evacuate Nigerians at their own cost as is the norm now.

Why you are not hearing is because no one will leave heaven and take a trip to hell
