"#IRS deposited the first Economic Impact Payments into taxpayers’ bank accounts today. We know many people are anxious to get their payments; we’ll continue issuing them as fast as we can," the IRS wrote on Twitter.

Deposits will continue in the days ahead, starting with people who have filed tax returns for 2018 or 2019 and authorized direct deposit. Others -- including people who haven't filed returns, authorized direct deposits, or receive Social Security -- will probably have to wait week or months before seeing their money.

The distributions are part of the $2.2 trillion economic relief package passed by Congress in March.

I believe this is an opportunity to build the tax base of the economy. The government can:

1. Generate a list of a desired income bracket to benefit based on existing tax filings

2. Encourage other entrepreneurs who have not been paying tax to do so over a window period or at least make appropriate filing (say in the next 3 months) those that make these payments or filings can then benefit from the bailouts, but more importantly is that government has their details to follow up on tax payments from them as soon as economic activities restart.

Nigeria's tax coverage is very low. There is no money to provide the kind of help that is being provided by developed countries.

Nigerians pay indirect tax. We pay tax on all calls made, We pay VAT on PHCN bills etc.
