Virginia Woolf (Virginia Edeline Stephens) - English writer, critic, translator, born January 25, 1882 in London. Father is a successful writer, philosopher and critic, mother is a secular lady, girlfriend Mariam Hariett.


Childhood and youth

Virginia was born into a London family of aristocrats. However, aristocratic prosperity was nothing more than a beautiful wrapper. According to biographers, little Virginia, along with her sister, was sexually harassed by her older brothers from her mothers previous marriage. Fear of physical love lived with a woman all his life.


When the girl was 13 years old, grief happened in the family - her mother died. The event was a blow, Virginia suffered a nervous breakdown. In the near future, a whole series of tragedies awaited: her beloved brother Toby and older sister, and then the head of the family, died of typhus, and a little later, after the death of her father, her own house turned into a circle of intellectuals. Together with her sister Vanessa Bell and her brother Adrian, they sold the parent mansion by buying housing in the bohemian Bloomsbury area. Young artists and writers began to gather here, the society became known as the Bloomsbury Circle.

Leonard was reverent towards his wife, supported in everything. Marriage has become an intellectual union based on mutual respect. Wolfe created ideal conditions so that Virginia could comfortably write. And yet, in the writer's personal life, there was a place for quivering feelings that researchers attribute to the most interesting facts of the biography.

When Virginia turned 40, the aristocrat Vita Sackville-West fell in love with her. The relationship lasted five years. The husband did not object to this love affair, the more the novel only benefited - during the years of meetings with Vita Virginia wrote her best works.





Last years of life

Woolf suffered from a mental illness, often went to the clinic for treatment. Over the years, the disease progressed, forcing to throw a pen for a while. The woman agreed with Leonardo: in the case of the German occupation, both would commit suicide. Virginia met 1941 year in a terrible state. Headaches did not subside, the voices in the head became clearer, the woman was annoyed with and without, and the doctors shrugged. According to modern psychiatrists and doctors, Wolfe suffered from manic-depressive psychosis. Another cause of the disease is called a brain tumor.


In the spring, Virginia wrote a farewell letter to her husband, where she asked for forgiveness and explained that she was no longer able to torture herself and him. On March 28, 1941, the writer drowned in the Ouz River.
