Recall since the Corona virus Pandemic started several nurses, in the front line, who got wind of the proposed pay disparity between Doctors and nurses took to social media to protest the pay disparity between Doctors and Nurses.

It was Initially proposed that nurses would be paid 140k every 2 weeks, while Doctors would receive 250k every 2weeks. However in a turn of events, and with more eminent Nigerians kicking in, Doctors fighting Covid will receive 50k per day, Nurses will take home 30k per day, and support staffs and cleaners will take home a whooping 20k per day. Note that this amount paid to nurses this time is comparable to the salary of an Entry grade Nurse in the UK. However, the Nurses have rejected this pay, and asked for the same or more pay than Doctors during this this.

Below is their letter to the Honourable Minister:

Here is the open letter they wrote to the FCT Minister protesting the “wage inequality”….

10th April, 2020

The Honourable Minister
Federal Capital Territory Administration
Abuja

DISPARITY IN HAZARD ALLOWANCE FOR FRONTLINE WORKERS

We bring you fraternal greetings from the National Association of Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council.

We write to express our displeasure with the recent health hazard allowances announced by the FCTA. In the schedule of the allowances, medical doctors will receive N50,000, nurses will get N30,000 while other category of health workers were placed on N20,000.

First, we wish to posit that at this crucial time of concerted efforts to stop the Covid-19 pandemic, monetary benefits should never be prioritized. This does not, however, erode the global healthcare best practice of providing special allowances for medical personnel at the frontline of health emergencies such as Covid-19. Globally, the award of such allowances is governed by the principle of equal remuneration for work of equal value as established in the preamble of the Constitution of the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

Second, Honourable Minister, every health worker is exposed to the same risk while at work. In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, nurses and midwives are even at more risk of infection given that they spend longer hours with patients. This is why nurses and midwives earn more than medical doctors in many countries especially in advanced climes. Even in Nigeria, many senior nurses earn more than medical doctors.

As we stated earlier, we cannot prioritize incentives more than our calling to save lives. It is, however, important that where incentives are provided, it should increase the bond of unity among health workers and not divide or distract us. At this time of health emergency, all members of the health team – nurses, midwives, medical doctors, laboratory scientists, and even cleaners, deserve equal treatment.

We, therefore, request that the Honourable Minister should use his good offices to redress this injustice against nurses and midwives in the FCT by granting a flat rate for all category of health workers. This will go a long way in promoting unity, conviviality and solidarity in the ranks of health workers as we continue to give our very best in containing and defeating the rampaging corona virus disease.

Comrade Deborah Yusufu
Chairman, NANNM
FCT Council

Why must everything be monetized in Nigeria. Any extra payment should be seen as a privilege rather than a right. Soon Police will ask for extra pay to disperse a chaotic crowd as if its not their routine to disperse people in that scale, and fire fighters would soon ask for extra pay to fight off and overwhelming fire, as it is an unusual massive outbreak. This money culture has and will continue to be Nigerias undoing.

In all advanced countries, there was no extra pay for health workers to fight covid, as it was deemed to be their job to take care of Ill people in the first place, and no one can demand to be paid more for what he been contracted to do in the first place.

Covid is an infectious disease, and infectious disease Doctors and Nurses are in the frontline of fighting this in the UK and Europe, once they need ventilatory support, anaesthetists are involved to provide possible ICU care. AnE doctors and nurses pick up those who come in as Emergencies, stabilize them and refer them accordingly. While public health workers engage in health advocacy and contact tracing. The Laboratory staff off course are engaged in massive testing. Thus their already contracted model of care continues, and no one scouts to be paid extra, as everyone was contracted abinitio to take care of sick people. Only incentives like free food, free uber rides, weekly national ovation, shopping priority are given. Also the worker advocate more for protective equipments.

But in Nigeria Doctors and Nurses see Pandemics and outbreaks as opportunity to make it big. Meanwhile the Government have invested greatly already in these specialties, training Infectious diseases Doctors, Public health Doctors, Anaesthetist etc for free, while even paying them during these years training. Yet they all come up to demand extra pay during outbreaks. This in my opinion is quite selfish and not the way to go.

Nigerians are so confused they asked for an increase. Doctors just prescribe drugs to patients and that is all.Only few are willing to listen to patients when they table their complaints. Always in a hurry to listen to patients that is why there is always Misdiagnoses. I will admit to it that the facilities are lacking and discouraging but we should always consider patients health.
For Example, If they have not paid doctors salary for 3 months you will see the amount of people that will troop out to protest leaving their patients to die and suffer all at the expense of money. People will say that wouldn't they feed? But if you can attend to the needs of a Doctor what of other workers like, Lab scientist, nurses,Janitors and many more. We should not be biased in our talk please.
Doctors are number 1 in the health system no Denial but you should consider your subordinates because without them you are nothing.
Imagine a Doctor running test, attending to patients, giving injections, delivery and doing preop, emergency all by themselves? So u see the little things matter.
Many Doctors are proud, some will say cause I am not one even some old ones are proud.
There is something a retired Doctor told me.
He said that, A time will come when you will realise that pomp and pride of life isn't worth it.
You may not agree with yourself but conscience is always is there.

The Doctor definitely may have an overall more rigorous training, but there are no surbodinates in the medical profession, as every health care belong to their professional group, and are thus professionals in their own right.

It's easy to quickly point fingers at one particular group like saying "Doctors are proud". These kind of statement generally aims to absolve ourselves of any fault. Johesu have brandished this thought for long to drive home a point, but it actually far from the truth. The behaviour of Doctors in Nigeria is a subset of the Countries problem, and other healthcare professionals are not innocent.

Apart from Doctors, the Police who are meant to protect life, generally make life more unbearable for people, Our Leaders are generally not doing enough, and the rot is everywhere. And if you are fair, the Number of industrial actions carried out by Doctors vs other health workers in terms of working hours lost in the last few years should be comparable, however we are sympathetic towards other health care workers who also are not near perfect and have caused severe damage, like destroying hospital properties, cutting off power supplies despite knowing that some patients are in ICU requiring life support, and some beating up doctors, and even blocking doctors from running side labs in teaching hospitals. Doctors would generally not go the latter route.

I am sincerely praying for Nigeria and hope to do my own best from now on. Let's do ours and hope that the future becomes better.

We must all be rich.

Well you are right a lack of communication and understanding leads to poor growth and division. That is why the medical field is like this
