Since the outbreak of covid 19, a lot of commentators especially on faceless forums like nairaland have been worried about the outbreak of the disease in the north in their words, the casualties will be alarming. This worry sometimes is masked in wishes and prayers, since praying for evil to befall our fellow humans have become a way of life in certain cultures and religions in Nigeria. The reason why they feel that way I don't know. If it is poverty, covid 19 does not pick only poor people. As a matter of fact, the most affected in the country so far have been the rich. Is it illiteracy? well, northerners are the most informed people in Nigeria. Some people think being enlightened is only knowing how to speak English. If it is theier lifestyle, they live just like people do in any other part of the country.
Some of these malevolent people have never been to the North and they don't know that most Northern states are more developed and have better health care facilities than their own places, in their eyes, all notherners are shoe shiners and mai gaurds. However it is, they always predict doom for Northern Nigeria.
Ironically, these same people always send counter prayers and "back to sender" whenever the Europeans and Americans predict such doom for Africa, not realizing that the west sees this continent in the same light as they see Northern Nigeria, the Almajiris of the world, a continent of poor and ignorant people.
The spanish flu outbreak at the begining of the 19th century ravaged both the north and the south of the country. The records of the casualties are there far all to see. It was just as devastating in the south as it was in the north. While the disease claimed the lives of 2.3% of northerners, the fatality rate in the south was slightly higher (2.8%).
So please and please, worry not about the north but for thyselves and thy children. The North will be alright.
