The Duroc pig was developed in the united states in the mid 1800s. The are the second most recorded breed of swine in the USA today.

Pigs have a number of distinctive features that make it easy to recognize them among representatives of other breeds.
Duroc pigs are reddish brown, largely framed, medium length, muscular growing, with partially dropping ears, broad ham & shoulder and strong dark hooves and legs, head relatively small with short neck. Boars weigh 300-360kg, 1.8-1.85m in length while sows weigh 240-300kg, 1.75-1.80m in length.

Duroc are one of the fastest growing breeds of pigs when they are kept on a consistent nutritious diet. They are classified as medium size pigs although they tend to be at the high end of this category. Piglets feed on the right diet can reach 100kg in 170-180days.

The Duroc breed is not aggressive, they are friendly, affectionate, and quite personable.
Duroc are not very good at farrowing large litter of piglets. The sow can have 9-11 piglets per farrow, survival of piglets from sows of this breed is 93% which is not too surprising because sows of this breed have a well developed maternal instinct, have a calm character, take good care of piglets and feed them well. To get healthy piglets feed the sow properly while pregnant.
Duroc are the best breeds for cross breeding of pigs, especially when you mate a male Duroc boar with other sow breeds (E.g large white and landrace) when cross with this breeds they farrow huge litter of healthy piglets. Piglets of this breeds are usually heavy from birth.
Duroc pigs are excellent for free range farming, for farmers who want to rare pigs outdoor. They adapt perfectly to all weather both cold and hot weathers.

The meat from Duroc pig is typically dark red in color, maintains moisture well and has good fat marbling throughout. It's one of the best taste of pork among other breeds.

Note:
Despite the wide distribution of this breed, pure breeds are difficult to acquire. To purchase this breed its better to turn to a specialize breeding farm where you can be guarantee pure breeds.
When going to purchase this breed pls do make sure u have well knowledge of this breed or you go along with one who does.
