The pandemic lockdown this year means there will be a very different ‘420’ – but here are the origins of what is now known as ‘weed day’

On the 20th of April every year, partakers (weed users) traditionally light up joints across the world in celebration of a special event – it’s “weed day”.

While the roots is still unclear, one thing that has remained is the association of marijuana with this single day without fail.

In Nigeria, the biggest event is undoubtedly at Lagos, in times unaffected by the COVID-19 lockdown (which this year obviously prohibits such gatherings), thousands congregate annually to enjoy a smoke.
Why is it 420?

The reasons behind the date are still debated to this day.

In 1971, the group, who called themselves The Waldos, began using 420 as a shorthand for smoking weed.

This spread, 4.20pm became known as the perfect time for smoking weed, and the number 420 became synonymous with marijuana.”

Although 20th April 2020 will be subject to lockdown restrictions, every other year hundreds turn up in different locations around Lagos to peacefully gather and smoke.
