British scientist to head UN task force distributing Covid-19 vaccine as US blocks G20 agreement

One of Britain’s most influential pharmaceutical bosses has been appointed to lead a global task force which is hoped will speed the equitable distribution of a Covid-19 vaccine around the world.

Sir Andrew Witty, former chief executive of the GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), is set to lead an expert body which will organise the global effort to boost vaccine manufacturing capacity and ensure it is effectively and fairly distributed.

Sir Andrew, who gained widespread recognition for his efforts to expand access to access to vital vaccines across the globe during his time at GSK, said he was “deeply honoured to help lead this mission to seek a Covid-19 vaccine”.

The task force is being set up under the auspices of the WHO and the UN but may be co-chaired and operate independently if geo-political tensions demand it.

There are fears “vaccine nationalism” may get in the way of global cooperation on vaccines and therapeutics for Covid-19 unless international agreements are established soon.

The WHO has estimated that 70 vaccine candidates are already in development globally and at least five already entered clinical trials. No country knows who will get there first.

Each year around five billion vaccine doses are produced - including some 1.5 billion seasonal flu jabs - but the entire globe will need a Covid-19 jab, ideally in a sequence whereby health works and then the most vulnerable are vaccinated first.

The new task force is expected to be charged with helping to plan the logistics of vaccine manufacture and distribution around the world in advance of its creation.

With man's history of disease pandemics, Covid-19 is no different to many other dangerous diseases hunanity overcame and even eradicated with the production of effective vaccines and treatment therapy.
