1. Adequate Toothbrushing

Being adequate in toothbrushing involves the frequency and the manner. It is advisable you brush immediately after your sahoor, this ensures food particles are completely removed. This way, the bacteria won’t have something to feed on which can give you mouth odour. After your iftar, you can also brush your teeth.

2. Scrape Your Tongue

Most people use their brushes to clean their tongues. But there is a more effective way of cleaning your tongue- by using a tongue scraper. Scraping your tongue gently at least twice a day prevents food particles from gathering on your tongue and generating a bad odor.

3. Drinking Lot of Water

One of the major causes of mouth odour is dry mouth. During fasting, it is advisable you take lot of water during sahoor. Then after iftar, you should take a lot of water as many times as possible before you sleep. The essence of this is to remain hydrated during the period of fasting and this will go a long way in reducing mouth odour.

4. Avoidance of Certain Foods.

It’s advisable you stay away from foods that leave after taste. Some of such foods include garlic, onions. It’s advisable you avoid salty, sticky foods. Eat healthy, balanced diet and avoid eating strongly flavored or spicy food. Eating fresh vegetables and fruits is a natural teeth cleanser that works on clearing plaques and food residues and have antioxidant properties that are needed for a decent oral health.

You should quit smoking and stop taking alcohol, they noticeably leave odour that linger on. More importantly, you can use this blessed month as a starting point to stop taking alcohol and smoking, they are dangerous to your health.

5. Use of Dental Floss

Though this is not common among us. It is highly encouraged you make it part of your oral hygiene measures. A dental floss is a specially designed thread that can enter in between your teeth. Using it during fasting removes accumulated food particles in the tight spaces between your teeth, where your toothbrush can’t ordinarily gets to.

6. Use of Miswak

It is a tradition of the Prophet(SAW) to use the miswak throughout Ramadan.

Using miswak is not just a tradition of the Prophet SAW it has been proven by numerous international studies that the miswak has good and effective oral benefits.

The Prophet saw urged us to use the miswak saying ‘Make a regular practice of the Miswaak, for verily, it is healthy for the mouth and it is a Pleasure for the Creator (i.e. Allah is pleased with the Muslim who uses the Miswaak)” [Bukhari].
