Albert Einstein, the popular scientist once said that there are only two ways to live your life. one is to live your life as though everything is a miracle and the other is to live your life as though nothing is a miracle. The first approach is to consider happiness as the most important thing in life and the other is to consider having a sense of meaning as the most important thing in life.
Much of what we do in this life is motivated by the all consuming desire to be happy. we seek happiness, we want to be happy and remain so but you can’t be happy all through your life. life is a continuous drama of pain with occasional episodes of Joy. The notion that we exist in order to be happy is an inborn error, because upon attaining the things that bring happiness to ourselves we quickly return to our previous states of being. striving for happiness is like an unquenchable thirst and we may attain some brief satisfaction but we will always return to our default state of dissatisfaction and unhappiness.
life is suffering and what we can do about it is to accept it and try to overcome it the best way we can and we can do this by finding a sense of meaning in life. sometimes life can be brutal but meaning is derived from perseverance. The one who persists is a person of purpose. In the moment of immense suffering and crisis it is meaning alone not happiness that can provide us with the resilience needed to endure the suffering. a meaningful life is one in which there is a high amount of sufficient value. There is nothing more real in life than a sense of meaning. it is important to know that you cannot find meaning through the attainment of external goods such as money fame status and so on. many people develop a successful carrier, amass wealth and social status only to discover that despite their outward success their inward existence remains desolate and devoid of meaning. walking in the path that is more challenging makes life more meaningful. it forces us to focus on cultivating character. if we focus on becoming a more complete and integrated individual, we greatly increase our chances of finding meaning in life. so there is need to set certain goals for yourself and note that these goals need to be of value to your life, that is, they must contribute to the growth of your character.
Also understand that, the process of attaining the goal is more important than the goal itself. The process changes your perspective in life and gives you a complete sense of meaning.
Just as the earth revolves around the sun,so life revolves around us bringing different faces at different stages of our lives. so your goals can change as you experience life more often. As your experience differs, you become a different man and hence your perspective changes.
The thing that is so interesting about life is that it is like a game that we must play. we are all in no matter what we do. we are all going to die someday. so why not make it the most magnificent game we can ever play, why not pick the best thing possible we could do. why not find meaning in life. choosing the path of meaning makes us abadone our obsession for happiness. In exposing ourselves to the struggles and strife required to cultivate character, we would likely attain the state of happiness far more frequently than those who aim squarely at it. let us be aware that if we live our lives without doing that one thing, that gives us a sense of meaning,then everything else we do in life is an illusion.
