IMF May Approve Nigeria’s $3.4 Billion Loan Today by Sweetpopcorn: 5:41am On Apr 28, 2020
There are indications that the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund may approve the $ 3 . 4bn loan sought by Nigeria on Tuesday ( today ) .
Although the Minister of Finance , Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed , had on April 6 , while announcing that Nigeria had applied for the loan , said the funds were expected within six to 12 weeks , Reuters and Bloomberg reported that the IMF would meet over the request today .
The reports quoted unofficial sources in the IMF.
If approved, the loan would be among the largest allocations by the IMF to an African country in response to the COVID - 19 pandemic .
It is expected that the IMF Executive Board would approve the loan having already approved similar requests for several countries .
According to the IMF, about 102 countries applied for aid as a result of the COVID - 19 pandemic .
The IMF Managing Director , Kristalina Georgieva , had in a statement on April 7 said the organisation was working hard to respond to the request as soon as possible .
Georgieva noted , “Nigeria’ s economy is being threatened by the twin shocks of the COVID- 19 pandemic and the associated sharp fall in international oil prices . ”
The IMF boss also observed that the Federal Government had initiated a number of measures aimed at containing the spread of the virus and its impact .
The measures, according to Georgieva , include swift release of contingency funds to Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
She added that the Nigerian government was working on an economic stimulus package that would help provide relief for households and businesses impacted by the downturn.
The organisation has also said Nigeria and other African countries need an estimated sum of $ 114 bn to fund the campaign against the outbreak of the coronavirus disease in the continent.
The Federal Government is hoping on the IMF credit, and similar loan requests from the World Bank and the African Development Bank , to cushion the effects of the pandemic on the country’ s economy .

Minister for borrowing affairs. Anytime this woman appears in the news it's when Buhari wants to borrow money. U never see her granting press conferences discussing fiscal policies and development in macro economy.

The way imf was warning Nigeria about too much debt few months ago, you will think they really care and will never approve one for us.

However, they were only pained that Nigeria and Africa is turning to China instead of remaining imf slave forever. You will see how their narrative rhetoric will change digitally

I only hope punch - PDP and their Ipob miscreants will be happy now when the Taskmaster imf come up with usual conditionalities meant impoverished Africa

No reasonable persons or institutions should lend money to the Nigerian government. The money will be plundered before it gets here. I want those thieves to have nothing to steal.

At least $1b should have been given out to citizens as palliative to sustain the lockdown for the next 1 month while massive testing is being carried out.

But funny enough there is no plan to give out any of the money as palliative to the citizens, only plans to use them for phantom Civid 19 projects.

The money will mostly be shared among the elite. Believing that they will use up $1b for projects to combat Covid 19 is giving Nigerian leaders too much credit.

That's too much oo. The government of the day would embezzle it. Except there is going to be close monitoring like US did before releasing the Abacha loot which prevented part of the money from entering Bagudu, the Kebbi State governor's picket as largesse from the federal government. The first thing they should think about as soon as the loan is approved is a complete overhaul of our health institutions and construction and equipping of primary health centres across Nigeria. They must ensure they don't supply junks to equip those hospitals and no local contractor is engaged in building construction because they'd do a bad job as they do our road projects which hardly last 6 months.

More doctors must be employed to add to the existing ones in the country because almost all of them have left the country. They should introduce a robust package that would prevent the remaining ones from seeking greener pastures overseas...but my question is...would they do all these with the money? I doubt.

I hope this does not lead to an external debt crisis in the future, since the 90s ,we have experienced a decline in our industrial output and our export performance has not been encouraging, as a continent Africa has the largest number of mineral resources, and africa also has a huge population as 70 % of her population is below the age of 40. But with all of these advantage most African nations still depend on loan and aid to survive or to even make a meaningful budget,The annual income of Google is more than the total income of all west African nations combined,if Nigeria is truly the giant of Africa then the hope of Africa is really bleak .we have develop our human capital, intellectually and our values has to be realigned,The right values always creates value the previous Generation were Enslaved with chains, the next Generation should not be Enslaved with debts, it's time to think outside the box and to also live outside the box#God bless Nigeria#
