Are we a nation of dullards ?, or what, i cant just phantom how 80% of our students who studied for 3years for a particular exam, still managed to fail massively. We are a nation of jokers if we do not take this trend seriously and address the issue.
Lets us look at the WAEC statistics
Nov/Dec WAEC Exams 2010: Only 62,295 out of 310,077 obtained 5credits inclusive of maths and English, representing just 20% pass rate
May/June WAEC Exams 2010: Only 33,0711 out of 1,351,557 had 5credits inclusive of maths and English, representing just 25% pass rate.
June/July NECO 2010: Only 285,146 out of 1,113,117 had 5credits inclusive of maths and English, representing just 24.9% pass rate.

This is as a result of misplaced priorities, students are not serious and the teachers are not qualified most of the time.

Its time for solutions, I am more interested in the 20% that passed. Is there anything we can learn from them and how they passed. We need that conversation to help solve the problem.

It is time we ban Premier league, Smartphones and other entertainment avenues cause it is more of distraction rather than assistance. In my days In Nija in the Mid 90's students did well in respective of whether it is gce, waec, ssce or jamb.

what has happened - or it that everyone wants to become a musician.

tpia*:

they might have to start revising the grading criteria to reflect the reality on ground.

Revise what Missy?

Didnt we all take the same exam before jetting out?

Lets call a spade a spade

The problem is not with the grading system itself, why do we need two parallel exam bodies in the first place?

How do you effect this ban? EPL matches do not run during school hours, hence why the distraction. In the mid 90s we watched TV but we still passed and some failed. And why can't we use smart phones/video games to help make students better. We need to ask questions as a nation to make things better.

I wish i knew how to reduce these distractions. I was in sec school btw 91 and 96 and i can fairly remember not having this much distractions.

I don't think the teachers are teaching the curriculum. That has to be the only reason.

How can people have access to past papers and still fail exams?

And the education minister hasn't resigned?Shame.
What plans does "it"(the education minister) have for the sector and to arrest these kind of results.

Mind you, atleast 80% of those 25% percent did runs in there exam to get be in the 25% pass range.
I just pity the kind of future leaders we are going to have.
When I wrote my WAEC just 13yrs ago, I knew what I went through to get my grades but its just so sad that every students and their parents are arranging for one sort of runs or the other for probably one of the easiest exam they will ever write in their whole life because you have a whole 3 years to prepare for the exam.

Why will they be serious when the government is not serious. As far as i'm concerned the blame falls on the government. The government have not done anything to improve the quality of education in Nigeria. The level of corruption haa also contributed. A situation whereby preferential treatment  when when admitting people into universities, why won't there be problem.
Re: 79.6% Students Fails Again In Waec Exams by myk2mic: 1:00pm On Jan 10, 2011
Its a question of misplaced priorities.Finland is a nation that is 100% literate and allocates over 50% of its budget to education. But here in Nigeria its the opposite.Education is made up of three ingredients students, teachers and infrastructure.

Students- no longer serious or interested in getting educated, no self motivation or self inspiration, don't know how to study or don't study at all. So i guess that the percentage that passed are those who dug deep enough , went the extra mile(by hook or by crook)and understand the value of education.

Teachers--- old school, my opinion is that most of them have no business teaching in this present jet age. they have nothing to pass to the students. Most of the teachers we have are in the profession by chance and not by choice and as such have no interest in the performances of the students. In fact some of them are no better than the students.

Infrastructure-- practically nonexistent as far as govt schools are concerned , at least we can thank some private schools for putting up some good infrastructure. So now how do u get to teach students wen the environment itself is not conducive.

deal wit those three factors and things would begin to take shape.

I don't really know who to blame:government, students, parents, society or teachers ?

Re: 79.6% Students Fails Again In Waec Exams by Nobody: 1:09pm On Jan 10, 2011
Methinks, there are many factors responsible for this woeful performance. Let's stop blaming the STUDENTS, pls. The government got a huge part to play. It's not incorrect that our dear nation least valued education. Tell me, what's the essence of schooling when larger percentage of graduates are unemployed! The issue here is that, there are No motivating factor(s) to inspire the youths.
Poor/weak academic Foundation
Secondly, the proliferation of private schools has done more harms than good to the system. Maybe cos of the money the government derive from private school registration, they've found it difficult to truly scrutinize the 'bad' ones. We're got lots of private schools with unqualified teachers teaching more than 5courses. I know of a younger friend who teaches eleven (11) subjects in one of the private school. Some teach 3, 5 etc. Eventually, these ill-tutored children from private primary schools are forced to join public secondary schools since most of their parents can't afford the high school fees. a Methinks, our government should lay more emphasis and put in more efforts & committment on public schools, there, they've got crops of well trained and qualified teachers.

additionally, i use to think of it that what then is the impact of private high school in the W.A.E.C result? Or
do they totally make up the 15-20% that pass the exams annually?

Wrong. We had super nintendo and 'late night movie' in our days and we never had this mass failure.
Many of these students failing are from educationally disadvantaged areas with poor teachers, abysmal learning environment etc. Some of the blame can be placed on their parents that overload them with work after school, or fail to encourage or spur their kids on to read. I served in a village in Abia state and the average girl in my class would go home to tasks like sweeping, cooking dinner, bathing babies etc. most of these girls go straight to the market from school to sell goods!
This scenario is rampant in many rural areas in Nigeria, places where they don't use smartphones or blackberries, places where watching more than 2 EPL games a week is a luxury.

Of course, you have the really dumb ones who aren't smart enough to pass. We can't fix that.

Is WAEC now harder than it used to be

Talking about smartphones as distractions.
I wz plenty distracted in my SS3, power shacking us, time to rule the skool and play like no tomorrow. I(most of my mates too) played and  partied a lot and generally just crashed through the exams, but we all still cleared our waec, without Expo.  In fact i almost didnt complete my NECO(like most of mates) cos i was absolutely sure there was no way i was failing WAEC.
Did it get harder or am i missing something   .

On second thoughts ,  maybe it was all those sleepless nights and jacking we had already done in SS2 & 1 that helped us
