I've been with the young family during this lockdown period and I observed her closely..

When someone stands up from the chair, she quickly put her nose there. Likes to smell one's fart as well as puts her nose close to rotten food, dirty socks, shoes etc..

It's getting out of hand and the mom is worried now..

Is this normal? Is this a rare medical condition? Will she change this habit over time? What can we do to help her?

On a serious note,it's something she'll stop as she grows older,don't worry.
When I was a kid I used to like sniffing dust on nets that they put on the window.

Even now,I still like sniffing fresh clean money from the mint

Spank her a bit
She would outgrow it
If she doesn't, shame would make her outgrow it when her classmates start making jest of her .
She is just exploring and trying to understand her environment.
You can introduce her to better scents or smells , to change her preferences .

She’s normal. At the age I was eating mattress. Some correctional slaps and on a contact look out made me stop.

Hahaha, I was told by my mum about the battle she fought with me about stopping the habit of smelling anything handed to me. mhen! I can smell any thing. Give me money, I will smell it, food nko? My nose must censor it first, buy new things for me, I must smell them until the new smell of that thing can't be perceived again just about anything. She beats the hell out of me just to stop smelling my food when served. I got over that but my sense of smell is the most sensitive part of me till date. One weird thing about this even at this stage of life is that I never quite outgrow the urge to stay around any diesel engine fume. I don't cover my nose when a diesel powered truck emitting serious smoke is passing by like most people would, I will enjoy the smell like it is oxygen. If you have body odour, social distance measure is too close for comfort for me! This nose is something, I believe if my nose wait patiently, it will perceive lies easily... Now I am beginning to think I need deliverance.
