One group is given the test drug and the second group is given placebo I.e a substance that is inert like starch or flour.

The patients in the trial are " BLINDED" meaning those in the treatment arm and those in the placebo arm do not know whether they are receiving placebo or the actual drug. In some cases the doctors treating them are blinded too.


At the end of the trial the predetermined OUTCOME measure is evaluated in the Placebo group versus the Treatment Group.


It is on that basis that a determination is made that the drug works


All drugs go through this process before they make it to market ie they must be PROVEN TO BE BETTER than placebo.

The primary outcome was time to recovery, which was significantly faster in the remdesivir group (11 vs. 15 days, p < 0.001).
