Orji Kalu: - CAACASVI Commend Supreme Court for Upholding the Rule of Law.




A Civil Society Organization, Citizens Awareness Against Corruption and Social Vices Initiative (CAACASVI) has commended the Supreme Court for overturning the decision of a lower court jailing former Abia state governor and senator representing Abia north, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for fraud.


Justice Mohammed Liman was the judge who convicted Senator Kalu of N7.65billion fraud perpetuated when he was Abia State governor between 1999 and 2007. He was convicted alongside his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited and his former Abia State director of finance, Ude Udeogu.


However, the apex court in its judgment declared that the judgement delivered is set aside.

In a statement by its Executive Director, Comrade Olumuyiwa Onlede, it said the judgement proves that Justice Mohammed Liman who gave the initial judgement acted vindictively and in contravention of due judicial processes.

"This has also confirmed the suspicions of so many Abians and Nigerians at large that the conviction of Distinguished Senator Orji Uzor Kalu as a predetermined exercise by his enemies who are bent of pulling him down at all cost just for their own benefit and not in any way for the benefit of Nigerians and the anti graft war.

"The fact that Justice Mohammed Liman who was sitting on the case as a Judge of the High court was elevated to the appeal court but still went back to the same high court to give a rulling on a pending case, has said it all and according to the supreme court as an abuse of process.

"It confirms that Justice Liman knowing full well that he no longer have jurisdiction to sit on any case in the high court base on his elevation was determined to jail Senator Orji kalu at all cost feigned ignorance because he was committed to that unfortunate act. The reason we don’t know but for whatever reason, it is a condemned able act

"This did not come to us as a surprise as we have always said it in the past that there is need for total reform of the judiciary if we are to make a headway in the fight against corruption.

"We Congratulate Senator Orji kalu for this judgement and urge him to be prepared to defend himself at any time he is called upon by a reputable panel that will give him fair hearing.

"We also congratulate Nigerians for the milestone that is recorded in the judiciary through the supreme court as we believe today judgement is not victory for the accused persons alone but for all Nigerians who sees the court as their last hope.

Who amongst them are not? From bourdilion to daura then to kano etc. When this "fantastically corrupt" saints steps down come 2023, Nigerians would be availed with the ammount of fraud and corruption perpetrated under this government.
