Redmi Note 8 Pro Beats Samsung Galaxy S20+ In Gaming Test by beejayvince(m): 6:57pm On May 10, 2020
The mid-range Redmi Note 8 Pro has beaten the flagship Samsung Galaxy S20+ in a gaming test. Who could have thought?

The Redmi Note 8 Pro was launched in 2019 as one of the best mid-range phones of its time. In fact, it can be said to be a gaming phone considering the fact that it uses the MediaTek Helio G90T processor, one made for gaming. This device currently goes for about 1299 Yuan (roughly $184) for the 6GB RAM plus 128GB storage variant.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus is one of the devices in Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S20 lineup launched back in February. It is said to be one of the most powerful smartphones in the world right now and goes for about $1,000.

YouTuber Chong Li took to the platform to post a video comparing gaming on the Redmi Note 8 with its MediaTek G90T chipset and gaming on the Samsung Galaxy S20+ (with its Exynos 990 chipset). He ran the test for 30 minutes using PUBG Mobile. PUBG Mobile is a high-graphics game for mobile devices.

The result of the test was quite shocking. While the Redmi Note 8 Pro recorded a stable 60fps frame rate throughout the 30 minutes, the Galaxy S20+ struggled to even give 40fps. In fact, the flagship phone dropped from 60fps to 50fps just after 10 minutes.

So what caused the frame rate drop in the Samsung Galaxy S20+? It is a result of overheating and throttling, an issue that has plagued Exynos chipsets for some time. Note that there is also a Samsung Galaxy S20+ variant that is powered by the Snapdragon 865 processor. It reportedly generally performs better than the Exynos 990 variant.

Samsung is working on making the Exynos chipset better. The upcoming Galaxy Note 20 series will reportedly use a new Exynos 992 chipset which is expected to be 1-3% more power-efficient than the Snapdragon 865. Work is also ongoing on the Exynos 1000 chipset in collaboration with AMD. We expect to see this in the successor to the Galaxy S20 lineup next year.
