THE NCDC PUBLICITY DEPT. CAN'T EVEN WRITE IN GOOD
ENGLISH
Here's the message they sent to virtually everyone in Nigeria.
Check your message, you will see it.
The message is replete with grammatical errors.
Watch and see how we have corrected it on our WhatsApp
English Lecture Platform.
Thanks to Amos Endy Kay that sent it for correction.
FIVE ANNOYING MISTAKES IN JUST THREE SENTENCES
There are coronavirus cases in almost all Nigerian States,
even those who have not traveled. Anyone can be affected.
Follow guidance from health authorities.
************
CORRECTED VERSION
"There are coronavirus cases in almost every Nigerian state.
Even some people who have not travelled within or outside
the country are already victims. Anyone can be infected.
Follow guidance from health authorities"
*************************
ANALYSIS OF THE ERRORS
1.The s in the state should be small letter because state unlike
Nigeria is not a proper noun .
It's only proper nouns that are started with capital letters
wherever they appear in the sentence.
2.The comma ,after 'states' ,should be replaced with a full
stop.
3.The American spelling of traveled should be changed to the
British spelling 'travelled' since the message is written in
British English.
4.It's better they had used the word 'infected' instead of
affected.
5.... even those who have not travelled.. is referring to
'Nigerian states'
In the above sentence, there's the violation of pronoun
antecedent agreement.
Look at what it implies
even those (Nigerian states) that have not travelled..
Can Nigerian states travel?
It should be 'even the people who have not travelled outside
the country are already victims'.
Ladies and gentleman, it's high time we went for
technocrats, specialists in various fields including the field of
English communication instead of embarrassing ourselves.
The Nigerian government should learn this lesson.
