It is all about their profits so why act as though they were being generous or companies who laid off staff are bad?

The development is commendable and patriotic. It is also a reason to ask those economies of the world claimed to be giant and businesses, companies and agencies that are now singing and dancing towards recession that they were never what they claimed, because if the lockdown has not got to 3 months and they are already processing economically; then we need to recheck how we follow them and their claims.

Companies who had to lay off staff shouldn't be blamed either. This virus had a great effect and toll on almost everywhere and everyone.
But u see banks, dey ar heartless.Dix virus didnt affect dem coz more transactions were made from home or should we go into d controversial stamp duty charges? Reasons like diz ar why pple prefer owning dier biz atleast nobody can sack u

You cannot say they were not affected my dear. They were over affected as much as other companies. What MORE transactions were made other than the usual transfer or withdrawal
Do you know they also make billions from the loans they give out? Since the virus started, no single loan has been given out. Activities stopped in the bank. I am saying this from experience because I know top management staff of one or two banks. Don't blame them, BANKS WERE AFFECTED TOO!

well, as a food manufacturing coy, they are not expected to lay off workers. The only things we spend money on these days are good and, yes, data. Agro based industries are expected to rack in huge profits.
In any case, everyone must look inwards and start considering working for themselves. Start a small business.
Nice observation and advice

This is one of the best news so far in the face of the coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria.

The news is better than the military killing of the young man in Jos

It's better than the ravenous killings by herdsmen in Kaduna

Better than the government claiming it spends more than 600 million feeding school children in their home.

The news is better than reviving Ajaokuta Steel Company just to be looted again.

This is really a great news

It is the kind of news you read with a bowl on nkwobi and very cold bottle of Star Lager Beer

You cannot compare it to those things you mentioned.
Those are in no way a good news! They are metallic to the ears

A paint of sugar is now ₦2400, so you don get the money to pay the staff already as we have no choice but to buy irrespective of the price

The good news are is that Nigeria even has a self sustainable sugar coy that can even generate her own power frm sugar waste what stops other investors frm opening sugar factories.... economic recession hit hardest on countries that can't produce food for herself.

This Nairaland sha, well, money must be made.

I saw the other thread where Sunti treats their workers like slaves and the writer explained the PR stunt that was coming. Finally, here it is.

Some companies are just wicked, some made more gains than ever and still follow bandwagon of laying off workers to cut cost, when they were making abnormal profits they never gave the staff more welfare, just 3months delay on sales/ manfacture with little or no loss to some then they start making noise

DELTA STATE GOVERNMENT WILL SUFFER THE POST CORONAVIRUS ECONOMIC CHALLENGES IF THEY DO NOT CHANGE THE KIND OF LEADERS THEY ELECT INTO HIGHER PUBLIC OFFICE.

INDUSTRIALIZATION is lacking in Delta state.

What you see is just, petrol station, private school, hotels and churches.

NO MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES like what one can find in the south east like Innoson, Ibeto, and many others that is scattered around Nnewi, Awka, Aba etc

CRUDE OIL is getting lesser and lesser in terms of relevance.

What is the next goldmine. AGRICULTURE, MANUFACTURING AND FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRIES ETC

Some Nigerians working with Sunti Golden Sugar Estate Limited, located in Mokwa, a community in Niger state, just few hours away from Abuja, the nation’s capital city have cried out for rescue from forced casualistion and maltreatment in the hands of its high-handed foreign managers.
The concerned staff alleged that Nigerian employees of the company have been reduced to slaves, making life unbearable for them, hence their desperate for relief to them.
From written petitions addressed to the Chairman, Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc and and Manager, Human Resource, Sunti Golden Sugar Estate Ltd, and made available to newsmen, several complaints have been lodged to appropriate quarters, including the Chairman, Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc, Lagos, under which the Estate is a subsidiary.
They disclosed that, in order to continue to constantly intimidate, insult and harass the Nigerian workers, the foreigners at the helms of affairs changed the status of their permanent employment to casual engagement, which is renewable every six months, decrying that the new casualization status has made many of them to loose their employments, as every slightest perceived wrong doing attracts outright sacking.
One of the petitions read in part: “You will recall the several episodes of interference in patient management as well as the open confrontation on professionalism of medical team at the clinic by the General Manager’s wife.
“As much as possible, we have tried to comply with the needs/requests of the, at least within the belief that these requests are to improve efficiency in our operations and for the general benefits of all patients in the community.
“Following the last incident of the morning of January 30th, 2019, in which the wife of the General Manager came to the clinic, assembled all the clinic staff and uttered unprintable words against them.
The petition it continued: “Enormous pressure to breach the confidentiality of patient’s records in which case the GM is demanding for every patient’s medical details”, revealing that they swore to “Hippocratic Oath, to protect patients’ medical information.”
In another petition, written by the host community and addressed to the Chairman, Flour Mills Nigeria Ltd, Lagos, Mr. Du-Pisani, along with the firm’s community liason officer, simply referred to as Mr. Samuel, has been showing total disrespect to the community leaders.
It reads: “We the entire host communities has no any source of income for our livelihood because of the activities the company.
“The Company Liason Officer has not been having a good and friendly relationship with our communities as he is always against the welfare and social responsibilities of the company to our communities.
“The Chairman Sir, with these types of autocratic leadership adopted by company General Manager has led to termination of so many appointments and resignation of skilled, experienced and qualified personnel.
“It is on this note that we the entire host communities of Sunti Golden Sugar Estate Limited demand for Mr. Anio Du-Pisani as General Manager and Mr. Samuel who is Company Liason Officer removed for the peace and progress of the entire community of Sunti Golden Sugar Estate Limited.”

According to Joseph Umolu, the company’s director, Corporate and Legal Services, Sunti had just concluded its crushing season, harvesting 146,200 tons of sugar cane and producing 15,860 tons of sugar. He further stated that the company also produced 9,640 tons of molasses and 11,600 MWh of electricity generated using bagasse (sugar cane fibre) as fuel. The company is now entering its cultivation season and plans to maintain high levels of employment to ensure a seamless process.

Lol. Sugar isn't part of essential food. Many people would skip sugar in meals and it doesn't help that it has gotten more example..

Does your explanation make sense to you?

Why would they cut labour hours when they are making a lot of money?

We probably don't use sugar in cooking our daily soups,
But sugar is a vital ingredient in most of the already made food such as breads, cakes, biscuits, seasoning cubes, mineral soft drinks, fruit juice, ice cream, alcohol, beverages and so on...
Do people consume the above on a regular basis?
