Car scratches disfigure your car. Imagine that your clean car you bought but over time, you see scratches on it, it pains and also devalues your car further when you want to sell it. You may need to repaint your car over time, which may be costly, whether you involve in an accident or not. Please note that scratches and dents do not mean the same thing. Scratch is a disruption, mark or shallow cut on a surface made by scratching while dent is a shallow deformation in the surface of an object, produced by an impact or dent.

In this post, I am going to focus on scratches caused by the materials used when we wash our cars. It is very common to see scratches in most cars owned by Nigerians, even the "clean" ones. If you doubt me, go outside after reading this post and observe closely any car you see, however clean, you would see these scratches.

Most Nigerians (and some Car wash) use sponges cut from rice/beans sacks to wash their cars. They also use harmful detergents (like klin etc) instead of car wash detergents or even mild detergents like Morning Fresh. They use Hand use towels made of cotton to dry their cars, instead of towels made of microfibers. This over time leave scratches on our cars. Note that your car paint could still be 'clean' but scratches can be visible on close observation. It may cause your car paint to be hazy during afternoons.

HOW YOU SCRATCH YOUR CAR WHEN WASHING

1. During Rainy Season: During rainy season, dirt/mud attaches to your cars and most people would use their regular detergents to wash their car and use towels to dry it. This is wrong because as you wash your car covered in dirt/mud with the detergent solution, the dirt/mud (made up of tiny sand particles) would create scratches on your car.

2. Using dry rag/towel/cloth to clean dry dirt/mud that stuck to your car. May be you woke up in the morning and decided to just use a dry rag to clean dirt/mud in your car because the car "isn't that dirty" or you want to rush out, this is wrong and can lead to scratches on the car.

3. Using Towels, sponge cut from rice/beans sack or even your bathing sponge to wash your car.

4. Using just any detergent to wash your car, instead of car wash detergents.

5. Bonus: Spraying cloths/drying things in the sun on top of your car.

How You Should Wash Your Car:

What you need: Two buckets for washing, clean water, a microfiber towel (which unlike your usual towel/singlet or cloth, does not create tiny scratches), small foam, car wash detergent ( like Jumacks, Sil-Wax etc but if you can't afford these, get Morning Fresh detergent you use to wash your plates).

Steps To Wash Your Car

1. If you have tap water running, you can use a bucket but if you do not, get two buckets; one for washing and the other for rinsing

2. Use one of the buckets to get some buckets of water and pour it vigorously on your car, so as to soften/clear (some of the) the mud/dirt it accumulated, and wait for say 1 minute. This is usually important in the rainy season that it is easy for cars to pick up sticky dirt and mud.

3. Dip your foam in the bucket containing the detergent and wash your car from top to bottom.

4. Use the Micro Fiber towels to wipe it dry.

Why Micro Fiber Towels?

1. The microfiber towel has an enormous absorbency and absorption capacity so that it is the ultimate for repolishing or after rubbing of waxes and high-gloss seals.

2. This microfiber cloth is soft and non-abrasive. This makes it not cause scratches on cars or any other surface. This is double-sided and sewn with a soft surround. The touch feel of the fiber structure has also been improved considerably.

3. The cloths can be ideally used as cleaning or polishing cloths in various areas, perfect for cleaning cars, motorcycles or in the household.

4. With good water absorption to wipe off water stains on the car surface.

5. The towel is easy to dry and store with the hanging string.

6. Also, the fibers (made from polyamide fiber) don’t shed and produce lint that gets stuck on surfaces, like your towels.

You can buy Micro Fiber Towels online for less than 2500 Naira
