Churches, others protest erosion devastation in Anambra

Catholic and Anglican Churches have decried neglect by all tiers of governments of the erosion ravaging Obeleagu and Nkisi Aroli in Onitsha, Anambra State.
Protesting on the streets of the area, they called on the Federal and Anambra State government to declare a state of emergency on the gully.

Joined in the protest were Onitsha Improvement Union, the Justice Development and Peace Caritas, residents of Obeleagu and Nkisi Aroli Street in Onitsha.
Gully erosion had on Wednesday submerged 15 residential buildings in the area, two churches, a school after a downpour while about 700 persons were said to have been displaced by the development.

The protesters on Sunday said it had become imperative to declare the place a disaster area because 22 houses had been eaten up by the gully and about 1500 families displaced.

They said since September 11, 2019 when the gully erosion began till date, household property worth millions of naira had been lost by displaced persons, while ancestral graves and lands had been washed away by the menace.

Led by Rev Father Edwin Udoye, the churches and residents noted that the gully erosion would cause more damages in the area if nothing serious was done to mitigate it.

Displaying placards with various inscriptions, they said their lives were in danger.

Some of their placards read, "We have lost 22 houses including three and two storey buildings to Obeleagu/ Nkiai Aroli street gully erosion, "1500 families have been displace on Obeleagu gully erosion, Federal and Anmbra State government should declare a state of emergency on Obeleagu Street gully erosion Onitsha and many others.

They said,"We are calling on the Federal and Anambra State Governments to declare this place a disaster area as well as a state of emergency because the gully has gone beyond community solution."

"We are lucky to have lost no life here; we remember the last time we came here we told the woman in charge of the Redeem School here to relocate; we're happy she listened to us otherwise we would have lost many lives here because some children were living in the school."

"This gully erosion is so big and great that it is swallowing houses and we are afraid that a church here may be losing property worth over N150m if government fails to come in now.

Indeed, the Anambra State government should see the devastation as an emergency.

They said since September 11, 2019 when the gully erosion began till date, household property worth millions of naira had been lost by displaced persons, while ancestral graves and lands had been washed away by the menace.

This is a very bad situation that needs immediate response from the Government.
