Okada Ban: Gokada, Max Riders, Others Protest In Lagos by Nobody: 1:51pm On Jan 31, 2020
Some commercial motorcycle operators on Friday took to the street to express their grievances over the recent decision of the state government to restrict their movement in some Local Government Areas, bridges, and highways in the state.

The operators which include majorly that of Gokada and Max.ng staged a peaceful protest from Oregun road to the state capital in Ikeja.

Bearing various placards, the protesters appealed to the state government to regulate their services and not restrict them from operating.

They lamented that the business is their only means of survival.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, announced earlier this week that the government would enforce the ban on motorcycles and tricycles in six local government areas, as well as major highways and bridges from February 1.

He explained that the decision was taken after a robust assessment of the debate on the rate of accidents in Lagos, saying security and safety of the lives of the residents were paramount.

He also warned that all offenders and violators would be dealt with in accordance with the laws of the state.

This doesn't make sense at all.

With all this annoying traffic jam in Lagos!

I think this thing called government doesn't make sense at all.

Once you can buy sirens to blow away everybody, you think the world revolves around you.

Nothing lasts forever, for sure!

sad

Who will then provide an alternative means of survival?

I really ponder to know the very moment our government officials will see public policy as not an impulse surrender to populism.

Rather, it must be a thoughtful, realistic problem solving act, that is preceded by foresight, debate, and the weighing of all angles & scenarios.

We are bereft of leaders....

This is a tight call for the govt. due to the challenges of safety and security.
However, the govt. Should look for alternatives means to provide succor to commuters in Lagos as the traffic is getting worse by the day.

For the investors, this is a big blow for them and they need to rethink on how to go about it. Nigeria is just a funny place to invest as you never can tell what policy would affect your business the next day. 7.5VAT implementation commences tomorrow and will most likely affect some businesses.

They should engage the government in a robust dialogue and ask for alternatives if they're not going to reverse the decision.

Ambode is to blame.
If he hadn't been a tool just to reverse Fashola's policies,
the Okadas would not have overrun Lagos.

They should put their house in order.

I don’t know if it is still applicable now.

But back then, as an undergraduate. There is what is called Okada unions. Every okada rider plying that particular area must be registered to the union. You must also wear their apron with a number at the back. They have a task force put in place to checkmate some of their excesses.

Now, if an okada carried you from another far area to this very area, those task force will stop him and ask for his papers and the union which he belongs to before entering this area.

Now, they can checkmate crimes perpetrated by okada riders or normal bikes.

If they start misbehaving, the authorities of that area will approach the union and sort things out with them.

I've been trying to get my hands on that useless law that Lagos State enacted to ban Okadas.

How can you make a law that can directly impoverish millions of people in one day! If this is not pure evil I don't know what to call it. The law must be revoked! We will not stand for this deliberate act of wickedness and economic segregation.

God bless the good people of Lagos State!
