In the aftermath of last Thursday’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential primary that saw the emergence of President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s candidate for the April general elections, some northern leaders and groups have accused some of the northern governors of betraying the region.

Two northern leaders, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, ex-president Shehu Shagari‘s Adviser on National Assembly Matters and Alhaji Lawan Kaita, former civilian governor of old Kaduna State at the weekend reacted to Jonathan’s victory over former vice president Atiku Abubakar the consensus candidate of the zone.

Also, a group of northern youths under the auspices of the Arewa Citizens Action for Change, Arewa Youth Development Foundation and Arewa Student Forum yesterday vowed to ensure that northern governors who supported Jonathan are voted out of office for what they termed “shameless betrayal” of the north.

In the words of Kaita “These governors, who betrayed their people will be judged by the same people whose interest they have undermined, they will see evil if they do evil.” He added that all efforts would be made to ensure that those of them seeking a second term mandate are not returned.

He commended the governors of Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi and Niger States for delivering their states to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a Northerner, in the primary, saying that the “Traitors will pay dearly for what they have done, for betraying the Northern Region.”

Tanko said the outcome of the primary would have been different and in favour of Atiku “but for the manipulation by some of the governors”

He agued that: “If you take for instance states where governors decided not to interfere, the people showed that they would have voted for Atiku. 800 votes from five states is no mean achievement, If 10 other states were given freedom to vote, according to their conscience, Atiku would have scored 200,000 votes out of 375 ,000.” The second republic politician contended that the outcome of the PDP primary is not a true reflection of the feelings of the Nigerian people, including the delegates.

Speaking on behalf of the three groups at a news conference in Kaduna, the National President of the Arewa Youth Development Foundation, Barrister Abubakar Aminu Kurawa said that governor and their delegates to the primaries in Abuja have endangered the collective pride and future of the people of the region that fed and bred them.

According to them, the governors and their delegates greedily sold their collective and individual conscience for immediate gratification and promises of future political security, adding that “this development is particularly worrisome because most of those governors happen to be direct beneficiaries of the magnanimity of a region they now passionately hate”. They added that the governors of the north who are seeking re-election must “definitely pay for this act of betrayal”.

The groups urged Abubakar to reject the outcome of the primary election and seek legal redress as a way of asserting his democratic rights.

They also said the four PDP presidential aspirants who came together to present a consensus candidate for the primary should ensure that power remained in the north after the general elections in April.

According to the groups, “We are aware that former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan and their cohorts have planted their stooge in a named political party with the aim of splitting the reserviour of votes in the north. We shall expose them and their mission agents in due course. While we call on our people to massively reject any presidential candidate with established link with Obasanjo and Jonathan, the plot shall be defeated using available resources at our disposal”.

They accused the Adamu Ciroma-led Consensus Committee that picked Atiku for the primary of failing to put in place an alternative plan, saying “even after the supposed northern candidate has been defeated with the active support of a bankrupt leadership, the Ciroma Committee has no alternative and is obviously helpless.

“As a result, it is our resolve to mobilize the northern youths to rise and take charge of their collective destiny from the hands of these rotten, unfocused leaders. The time has come for the youths to stir the spirit of the great past northern leaders like Ahmadu Bello and Tafawa Balewa”.

The road to irrelevance is bitter. These fools think that the generality of Northerners are as ethnically bigoted and shallow minded like them.
The fool, Atiku is already thinking of impeaching Northern governors (maybe even worse) as part of his demonic plan B.

The nation must protect and support the Northern governors against the attacks of the likes of Atiku.

Everyone is free to vote whoever he feels he should vote for.
Please, ethnic or religious bias will take us nowhere, but only backward. We've achieved one great thing in this country that has not been done in most countries, even in those that accuse ours of massive corruption - a truly transparent election and we hope we maintain this during the elections in April.

Atiku had before shown lack of respect and utmost disloyalty to the party in the past. Its not surprising they have no respect for his ambition. And,besides,pdp will have all to gain choosing jonathan as the flag-bearer,and not atiku whose popularity is fast depreciating,even among his mallams.
