Which Nigerian Tribe Owns Ogbono Soup, Okro Soup, Egusi Soup by Nobody: 8:15pm On May 18, 2020 |
A similar thread was opened last two years but there was no convincing answer there, so i decided to bring this question back.. These soups are eaten by almost all Nigerian tribes but who owns them? we all know ukazi=igbo. .ewedu -yoruba afang, edidkaiking =efik, ibibio but who owns okro, ogbono, egusi Someone told me that Egusi belongs to the Bini people. Please someone with the knowledge should share with the rest of us. |

Ibos. No contest! Definitely can't be yoruba. Their trademark soup na ewedu. Do you know that the English word 'Okra' was derived from the anglicized Ibo word 'Okuru'. 3 Likes

Lol, if you're discernable you should even detect which tribe owns a particular soup. For instance, Ogbono is owned by Igbos and the name ogbono makes it obvious. Egusi is a derived name, it is actually egwusi which is also an Igbo soup. As for okro, I don't know the tribe that owns it. However, Igbos followed by Ibibios has the best local cuisines in Nigeria. 6 Likes |

Who cares? It’s a Nigerian delicacy enjoyed around the world. Ever wonder why Nigerian greats are not recognized internationally by tribe. |

proeast: Ibos own okra, the English derived that name from the Igbos. The evidence is there. 3 Likes |

okro is an oyibo anglicanized version for the Igbo word Okwuru, the okro seed was introduced by the white men and Igbos started using it to cook, I have an pre-colonial article to back it up. Egusi soup according to some originated from Yorubas, some said from Midwest, some said Igbos ,, am not very sure about egusi origin, will research. But Ogbono soup is Purely Igbo by origin, Ogbono Ilo is the original name, mostly popularised by the Northern Igbo areas. just like the way Ukazi and Achara belongs to the Southern Igbos. . If you eat my Ukazi with Achara soup ,garnished with moulded egusi, fresh fish, goat meat etc lol you will know that Oriaku is not just a nickname, it is a noble title 4 Likes

Ogbono is clearly Igbo's as we are the only tribe that cooks it. Egusi n okro would be difficult to trace their origins because many tribes cook them. |

Ogbono/Ogbolo is an Igbo word. Other ethnic groups have their own local names for Ogbono. I know Yorubas call it "Apon". "no/lo" means slimy in Igbo. And we know that Ogbono is a slimy soup. Ogbono = slimy when boiled. Ogbo = "boiled" ono = "slimy" 6 Likes |

Okra is obviously an Igbo soup. In fact the name Okra was coined by slave-masters from the Igbo word "Okwuru" when they saw Igbo slaves eating it. 2 Likes |

Ogbono and onugbu soup is fondly associated with Anambra/Delta igbos Oha soup and Ukazi soup is fondly associated with Imo/Abia Igbos Ukazi soup is Igbo version of Afang soup because they share the same leaf and ingredients. Flavoring is what differs. Other Igbo soups are OFE UGU, OFE ACHARA, OFE ELILE, OFE OWERRI, OFE NSALA, OFE OKRO, etc |

superlightning: No, okazi is not the Igbo version of afang. The only thing they share is the leaf. Everything else is totally different. I agree with the rest. |
Re: Which Nigerian Tribe Owns Ogbono Soup, Okro Soup, Egusi Soup by superlightning: 7:51am On May 19, 2020 |
pocohantas: Thanks for the correction. I actually didn't mean it as to being a subset of the other. Okazi is UNIQUE. Afang is UNIQUE. However, it's the same leaf. Forgive my misleading semantics. |
