Awolowo was never a nationalist. He was at best a regional leader.
He was both. What do you have to say of Ahmadu Bello? Was he a nationalist in any sense?

bello was very conservative . He was very much aware how educationally disadvantaged the north was. He was a cautious man. He disliked the igbos, because they where everywhere in govt. But he decided to go into alliance with ibo people because of Awolowo. He was even cordial with akintola, but never with chief Awolowo

That's not the question. Your position is that awolowo started tribalism in Nigeria. My question is was Ahmadu Bello a tribalist/regional leader or a nationalist?

Its not a crime for a man to be loyal to his tribe and work for their interest. But when that man incites hatred for another tribe as a way of garnering political power that is pure evil. You can protect and work for your tribe without attacking others and creating zombies to hate others also. What makes Awo's own worse is that after saying how bad igbos were for 3 decades he wanted to enter into an alliance with them to checkmate the north. So what happened? The igbos suddenly became angels in his eyes because he finally saw the real threat? Few years later he entered an alliance with the north when it was convenient for his ambition.

Awo, Zik and Bello were not saints and had their flaws. Awo's flaw was the tribalism he created to help his political career

Thank God you know that. Now go and research who brought tribal colouration into Nigerian politics between the two. At least you can start from there before looking at the colonialists themselves.

Yorubas always occupy at least 65% leaving the remaining 35% of others for share? But we don't chest beat.

Greatness is not limited to selling of spare parts, gala and Asha****.

Greatness is when you are able to excel in all aspects including politics (most important)

That's why we Yorubas don't brag, empty vessel makes the loudest noise.

I'm asking you to go and research on the subject of tribalism in Nigeria. If you did, you'll change ur mind about awolowo starting tribalism.
Besides the regional system of govt itself was built on a recognition of tribal differences. So there was no time the colonialists thought Nigeria should be one entity. Awolowo understood that. He was not looking for Yoruba to become the supreme tribe in Nigeria but wanted us to be able to determine our destiny by ourselves. Go and research what he said about Nigeria compared to what Bello or Azikiwe said.

No, don't do the bolded.
Remember Yorubas are Libras right from the beginning.

We don't vote 100% for one person.
That's why there is checkmate among all southwest regions.

And the reason why a current governor may lose his re election.

Zik schooled in america in the 1920s. Then the racism was mad. When he came back to africa , the racism he experienced while studying made himstarte a movement that saw to the expulsion of white men in Ghana and nigeria mainly, where these countries got independence . Zik wasnt interested in my brother this my brother that because he was very well read and exposed person. He was more of a pan african , which is why people from the south east despise him.,( yes they do,.. thier hero is ojuku) now this man Awolowo was all about my people ... Zia was all about national while Awolowo just couldn't get past regional shenanigans

But posterity has proven Awolowo wiser than Zik. In this world you start from your root not the other way round.

Zik was not a local champion like Awolowo. Zik played on international terrains, had the best and highest education and exposure among all the African nationalists as at that time. Zik equally influenced people like Nkrumah to go study in America(Read Achebe: there was a county)

So Zik of Africa was not your usual local poorly educated Nigerian politician.

One is constrained to reply these Igbo who have hatred ingrained in their DNA I wonder how comfortable they are wishing Azikiwe to rule the West after his party Ncnc lost the 1951 Regional Election?Awolowo achievements are still benefiting every Nigerian including the arch enemies wherever they are his free education drove Igbo to move into Yoruba West. What of Ikeja,Ilupeju,Apapa-Oshodi Industrial Estates who built these places? Awolowo was/is awesome your hatred cannot diminish his greatness. What are the legacy of Azikiwe & Okpara? Awolowo remain a yard stick for Administrative excellence, when you see Nigerians working in Nigerian Bottling Company (coke) Pepsi, Guinness,7up,Lafarge, Textiles mills, etc then you thank Awolowo's ingenuity

It's not a Zik vs Awo issue. Awo's tribalism is still impacting on his ppl and the country in general
Re: The Man That Started Tribalism In Nigeria by domDva(m): 9:01pm On May 23
See eh, you can hate Zik if you want but never because he is a tribalist.....even his staunch opponents acknowledged that Zik's passion for one Nigeria was his greatest weakness. He refused to play regional politics like Awolowo and Sardauna.

The MAJOR reason he chose a ceremonial position instead of becoming PM in a coalition with Awo was because he feared that Nigeria may disentangle because the North may see it as internal colonization because the Southern was far more educated.

Whether that nationalistic nature of Zik was good or bad for a clanish country as Nigeria is a different story.

quote author=SamNaijaboy post=89809901]Nonsense. NCNC had loyalty from Yorubas because it was always a Yoruba party before it spread to the East. It was formed and led by a Yoruba, Herbert Macaulay, who upon his death handed it over to Azikiwe. The Yorubas following Zik did that as a part of their loyalty to NCNC.
Zik is the most tribalitic leader of them all: he should have partnered with AG to be the PM, rather he preferred to be a ceremonial President/Governor General to the North.
He also wanted to be Premier in the West after installing another Igbo as Premier in the East instead of ensuring he went to the East as Premier and working to install a Yoruba in the West using the same party that he inhreited from them.

Same way Igbos come to Lagos to prosper yet can't stop themselves from hating the indigenes that helped them prosper in their midst, always thinking they are smarter than the people who created the environment that makes them excel. Zik should have realized he was a nobody without Herbert Macaulay and the NCNC he gave him to lead without any nepotism and not attempt to rule those who graciously let him lead the party
