Experts urge govs to set up laboratories As the COVID-19 pandemic rages in the country, 20 states are yet to have testing laboratories. Some of the states experiencing community transmission are among the top 10 with the disease.

This is happening as Nigeria’s testing capacity still trails behind what obtains in neighbouring African countries. As at Friday, Nigeria had 26 laboratories spread iacross 17 states. The country has also tested 40, 043 samples. This is far below the target set by the Federal Government to have about 68 test centres for COVID-19. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), in its strategy document published on April 15, projected establishing 68 testing centres and two mobile laboratories within 45 days.

States without COVID-19 laboratories have lamented that they encounter hurdles sending samples to Abuja or other neighbouring states, as well as long waiting time for results. They said the absence of testing centres was one of their major challenges in the ongoing fight against the virus. Some states have to wait for over a week to get test results, with some of their drivers getting infected in the process of transporting samples.

Checks by Daily Trust Saturday revealed that Akwa Ibom, Benue, Bayelsa, Enugu, Nasarawa, Kebbi, Niger, Jigawa, Yobe, Ekiti, Bauchi, Ondo, Zamfara, Abia, Taraba, Kogi, Cross River, Katsina, Gombe, Kwara have no COVID-19 testing laboratories. Some states have laboratories in hospitals or private facilities that could be upgraded for COVID-19 testing, however, that has not been done till date.

Ogun State, for instance, has established a molecular laboratory but still sends samples to Osun because it awaits NCDC accreditation. The state is in close proximity with Lagos, which has the highest number of COVID-19 cases. However, some states can boast of two or three laboratories.

They are Kano, Ogun, Lagos, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kaduna, Sokoto, Edo, Anambra, Borno, Osun, Plateau , Oyo, and Ebonyi, among others. They, however, said there was minimal support from the NCDC or the Federal Government in setting up or funding most of the laboratories. In Gombe State, there is no testing laboratory for COVID-19. Here, samples are sent to the NCDC in Abuja for daily test. The state’s focal officer on COVID-19 response, Dr Mohammed Kwami, said the test results usually come out in at least 48 hours, after which they are scanned and sent back to the Special Task Force on COVID-19 secretariat.

He said taking the samples to Abuja on a daily basis was not convenient, but added that they are using the channel as a temporary measure, pending when the state would get its own laboratory.

When Buhari was sending money for Lagos Covid-19 intervention, he should have released money immediately for lab set ups all over the country for early and regular spread assessments.

The N60 Billion the federal government wants to use for national gutter cleaning should be channelled towards a Covid-19 testing and early treatment programme.

We need to send a team to Senegal to start a Covid-19 response protocol in line with the Senegalese system. This will enable a cost effective and comprehensive approach.

This is a time to save lives. Not siphon money. The NCDC and Minister of Health need to change their greedy attitudes. Lives are at stake.

Lockdown means nothing without testing, isolating and treating infected ones.

How much will government make from creating testing centers? They won't

They prefer to do fake palliatives. because that's where they make money from

Re: COVID-19: 20 States Yet To Have Testing Laboratories by Seun(m): 7:41am On May 23
We must absolutely have testing labs not only in every state but in every major city or town, so that tests can be conducted very quickly and the infected identified and isolated before they start spreading the disease to other people (several days before they start showing symptoms). Speed is a force multiplier for testing. If two countries are test the same number of people per day, the one with faster testing will have better results. Countries need to keep increasing their testing capacity as fast as they can, using all the money that they have, until it gets to the level where the number of new cases start to drop. Whatever it costs, it is worth it.

bad...so disappointed seeing only p.h and imo from the list of top oil states with testing labs...instead am seeing more northern states or is it because of the population in the north or because of that case of mysterious diseases that killed many last month....was expecting to see akwa ibom or calabar but maybe the f.g or state govt are still working on it...just yesterday, i saw a news about our controversial mr.freeze blasting Nigeria because he saw rewanda adopting roborts that test hundreds of people in some mins by just scanning them and i think thats a good way to go because test shouldn't be based on symptoms alone bt it should be mandatory for all who wished to and not until u start experiencing symptoms....the number of tests conducted generally is too small for a state alone lyk kano not to talk abt a country...i jus pray the f.g get things right...happy weekend all

This is why things aren't moving the way it should. By now, we should have over 100k cases, if REALLY the virus exists.
