Few weeks after the Akwa Ibom State Government denied that nine members of the state executive council contracted the Coronavirus, 10 members of the Government House Press Corps are reported tested positive.

Sources from Government House Uyo, Akwa Ibom State intimated The Southern Examiner that 10 of the reporters covering the activities of Governor Udom Emmanuel have contracted the virus.

This development has caused panic in the Hilltop Mansion as the Government House is popularly known , with those deemed to have had contact with the 10 persons are being traced.

Workers in the Government House are scared of each other as they are not sure who has contact with the infected persons and the surfaces, equipment and machines that they might have come in contact with within the premises that are infected.

Etorobong Inyang of The Edge News took to his Facebook page on Saturday to announce that he has received calls from the Ibom Specialist Hospital, Uyo, that he should report there.

"BREAKING! Just received a call from Ibom Multi Speciality Hospital that I'm being contact traced for COVID- 19. Seriously #justthinking," Inyang posted on his timeline.

Inyang observed that journalists are now endangered species in the course of reporting the pandemic.

Mrs Idongesit Ashemeri of the Independent Newspapers also disclosed that she has received calls that they are contact tracing her.

Ashemeri, who is the Chairman of the Correspondent Chapel, Akwa Ibom State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, advised newsmen to stay safe while reporting the pandemic.

She continued that she will submit herself to test if invited, and explained: " information available to us has it that not less that 10 of our colleagues attached to government House press corps have been affected and you wouldn't expect that we did not at one point or the other have a close interaction with these ones."

There should be no cause for alarm if they are not showing symptoms. All they need is lock down the state house and do massive testing and contact tracing to isolate all cases. But selfish interests will not let them do that.
