The Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete on Thursday set the pace for other Nigerian Universities as the Institution, under the leadership of Professor Muhammed Mustapaha Akanbi SAN, conveyed a virtual Senate meeting.

The meeting which is the Vice-Chancellor's maiden Senate meeting since his emergence as the second substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University, gave all Senate members the opportunity to participate via video conferencing.

Presiding over this virtual meeting, the Vice-Chancellor said the rationale behind the video conferencing was to comply with the Federal Government's social distancing policy and at the same time keep the University administration running.

He said the University keys into all measures to mitigate the spread the current Covid-19 pandemic and as such was poised to prioritise virtual learning in the business of dispensing quality education to her students.

Topmost on the agenda of the meeting was the appointment of two new Deputy Vice Chancellors and two internal members of the University Council; Professor Omololu Oladele Fapojuwo of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences was appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration while Professor Sheikh Lukman of the Faculty of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences was appointed the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic.

Professor Abiodun Amuda Kannike of the Faculty of Law and Professor Emmanuel Ajani of Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences emerged as the internal members of the University Council.

While unveiling his programmes for the next five years, Professor Akanbi stressed that his agenda has been carefully designed to make KWASU a worldclass Institution.

He noted that the changing of the University's Collegiate system to Faculty system was to reflect what most academic staff were trained for.

Professor Akanbi also added that there are plans to introduce more innovative courses and programmes that will make graduates of KWASU total students and job creators rather job seekers.

According to him, students, irrespective of the course applied for, will now be advised to register for any language of their choice from Arabic, French or Mandarin and will be given certificate and transcript after their graduation in order for them to be self-reliant and have the opportunity to work within and outside the country after their graduation.

The Vice-Chancellor explained that all students would also register for any vocational skill of their choice along side their primary courses while all General Studies (GNS) courses will henceforth go online.

Other large classes will equally be online to afford students equal opportunity in terms of accessibility to lecture.

While thanking his predecessors, Professor AbdulRasheed Na'Allah and Professor Sakah Mahmud for laying solid foundation in KWASU, Professor Akanbi mentioned several other short term and long term planns and innovations to enable KWASU compete favourably with other leading Universities across the country and beyond.

Professor Akanbi also thanked members of the Senate for their support, cooperation and sense of understanding which facilitated the seamless and rancour free virtual Senate meeting.
