With each passing day we are getting closer and closer to holiday 2020(specific date not made public as of yet) which Sony Interactive Entertainment announced is going to be the release date for PlayStation 5, the newest addition to the PlayStation series. While waiting for the next-gen console why don't we take a look at the history of one of the biggest and best gaming console ever made.

Enter the first gaming console to be associated with Sony. The Nintendo Play Station, yep, you heard that right. The Nintendo Play Station, as the name implies was a gaming console or a project made by both Nintendo and Sony, Nintendo had Sony to create a compact disc add-on to its future consoles, whilst abandoning cartridges since at that time compact disc where the future of gaming. Although today they can be seen as Competitors in the gaming industry. It wasn't so in the past, not until they both went their separate ways, in the process, discontinuing the Nintendo Play Station.

After going their separate ways, Sony continued independently and released PlayStation in 1994, the first highly successful gaming console to feature the compact disc and not the traditional cartridge. Being a Fifth-gen console its competitors were the Nintendo's N64
and Sega's Saturn. PlayStation came out on top beating Nintendo by selling over 100 million units, which has since been dominating the gaming industry. After the success of PlayStation, Sony released a new smaller model of the console named PS1 in 2000. Among the things that made PlayStation a household name is, unlike Sega and Nintendo whose games where made by themselves, Sony's approach to that was a little bit different, most of their games were handled by third party developers.

PlayStation 2 was mostly kept secret during its early development years. Word later came out saying it will feature a DVD player, backward compatibility with its predecessor's dualshock and an internet connectivity. Fast forward to 2000 Sony debuted their brand new gaming console the PlayStation 2. it went on to break records, one of them being the best selling gaming console of all time, it is undoubtedly the most popular gaming console of this era, selling over 155 million units. With its best selling gaming GTA San Andreas selling almost 17 million copies. PlayStation 2 competed with Sega's Dreamcast, Nintendo's GameCube and Xbox made by Microsoft(Microsoft's first entry into the gaming industry).

Sony is now dominating the home console market with its previous gaming consoles. The PS1 and PS2 cemented Sony in the gaming industry having sold over 100 million units and 155 million units respectively. Sony at that time set all its eyes on the handheld platform which is dominated by Nintendo. Nintendo proved to be an unstoppable force in the handheld market with past competitors all failing woefully. This was not the first time Sony is having an appearance in the handheld scene. In the past, specifically in 1999 they released the PocketStation(Japan exclusive) which is basically a memory card peripheral except that you can play games with it, plus you can't fully operate it unless you own a PS1 console.

The PlayStation Portable popularly called the PSP was announced in a press conference at E3 2003. Later that year concept images of the handheld console emerged online originating from a Sony corporate strategy meeting. The following year at E3 2004, PSP was officially unveiled and dubbed The most powerful portable console. Being a seventh-gen console its competitor was the Nintendo DS.which managed to outperform PSP by selling over 154 million units against 82 million units. But if you ask me I will prefer the PSP over and over again. The PSP is programmed in such a way that it can connect with a PlayStation 2 and 3, computers running on Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows, other PSP systems and the Internet. The PSP is the only handheld console to use an optical disc format – Universal Media Disc (UMD) as its primary storage medium. The psp was developed and other version like the PSP 1000, PSP 2000, PSP 3000 and PSP Go. These versions 1000 2000 3000 has slight differences like slimmer body style, built in microphone, doubled ram, upgraded LCD screens, new charger and battery. But the psp go is very similar to psp 3000 only that it has a slide out design and a smaller display. The best selling game was GTA Liberty city stories having sold 7.6 million as of October 2015.

The PSP successor is the PS Vita, an eight generation handheld gaming console which has a 5-inch (130 mm) OLED multi-touch capacitive touchscreen, two analog joysticks, camera, front and shoulder push button input, and supports bluetooth, WiFi, and optional 3G. Sony discontinued production in March 2019 with over millions of units sold.

With handheld consoles being what was trending as at that time, the home video game consoles were not forgotten. An upgrade to the previous home video game console PS2 was made and was named PS3. Being a seventh generation console, it had many upgrades like the use of wireless controllers with USB ports still available for USB game pads, provision for HDMI, removable HDD which could be upgraded even to 1 terabyte and many more interesting features. It has backwards compatibility which enables it to run games of the predecessor. The console was first officially announced at E3 2005, and was released at the end of 2006. It was the first console to use Blu-ray Disc as its primary storage medium. The console was the first PlayStation to integrate social gaming services, including the PlayStation network, as well as the first to be controllable from a handheld console, through its remote connectivity with PlayStation Portable and PlayStation vita. In September 2009, the Slim model of the PlayStation 3 was released. It no longer provided the hardware ability to run PS2 games. It was lighter and thinner than the original version, and featured a redesigned logo and marketing design, as well as a minor start-up change in software. A Super Slim variation was then released in late 2012, further refining and redesigning the console. Sales of the PS3 was discontinued in countries like New Zealand but the units remained in production in other markets of countries like Japan until may 29 2017 where all sales were to be discontinued.

Sony kept on pushing and a successor of the PS3 was released and it was name the PS4. This console is an eight generation home video game console with serious upgrade on the CPU, Memory, Storage, Display, Graphics, Controller input and Connectivity. And this time the PS4 comes with a camera making the PlayStation far better than the predecessor. The PlayStation 4 places an increased emphasis on social interaction and integration with other devices and services, including the ability to play games off-console on PlayStation Vita and other supported devices ("Remote Play"wink, the ability to stream gameplay online or to friends, with them controlling gameplay remotely ("Share Play"wink. The console's controller was also redesigned and improved over the PlayStation 3, with improved buttons and analog sticks, and an integrated touchpad among other changes. The console also supports HDR10 High dynamic range video and playback of 4k resolution multimedia. The console was first launched on November 15 in North America, before it was released in Europe, South America, Australia and Japan. On September 7, 2016, Sony unveiled the PlayStation 4 Slim, a smaller version of the console; and a high-end version called the PlayStation 4 Pro, which features an upgraded GPU and a higher CPU clock rate to support enhanced performance and 4K resolution in supported games. The console is the 4th best selling console of all time. By October 2019, PS4 became the second best-selling console of all time, behind PlayStation 2 having sold 106 million as of December 2019 and shipped 110.4 million in March 31st 2020. The PlayStation 4 competitors are the Microsoft's Xbox one and the Nintendo's Wii u and Switch. I have to say these consoles are amazing especially the Nintendo Switch, but still Playstation is still the best of the best.

Just as we've have said before, PlayStation 5 is hitting the shelves holiday 2020, gamers worldwide are all getting excited over the next-gen console. Earlier this year in March Sony presented to us in a live stream a deep dive into PS5's architecture and specs. While it is still not revealed, Sony has managed to let us have a look at its gamepad dubbed the Dualsense.

The DualSense controller is very innovative in the sense that it will captivate your senses(no pun intended). It will feature 3D audio which players will feel as if the sound is within their surroundings. The L2 and R2 buttons are now adaptive triggers that will maximize your gaming experience and a microphone is now added so players can easily chat with friends when playing.

An old soldier that never dies.
People are still rocking PS2 100% till date.
Sony's ps3 was not a major hit though. I think the XBOX 360 slightly outsold it.
.
The Xbox one was a huge flop.

Couldn't agree more, I think one of the reasons the Xbox one was a failure is lack of exclusive titles.

Exactly, that's Sony's major selling point.
People are beginning to get tired of Halo and Gears of War. They've lost their magical appeal.
.

I owned both the XBOX 360 and PS3 at some point in 2018. I legit sold the PS3. Still using the XBOX 360 till date. Upgrade? Then it'll be the PS4

I'm more of an Xbox fanboy but I have to say they didn't perform the way I expected them to. Can't wait to see what they have in store for us in the future.
