It's #World Multiple Sclerosis Day!

Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic illness that has the potential to disable the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system).

Multiple Sclerosis currently has no cure but treatments that can help hasten recovery from attacks, manage symptoms and affect the course of the disease.

In simple terms Multiple Sclerosis is a communication problem between the brain and the rest of the body. It starts with the immune system attacking the myelin (the protective sheath that covers nerve fibres.

Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis differ from one individual to another and from time to time over the course of the disease.

Some symptoms include:
*Weakness in one or more limbs;
*Electric-shock sensations with certain neck movements;
*Lack of coordination or unsteady gait;
*Partial or complete loss of vision;
*Blurry vision;
*Slurred speech;
*Fatigue;
*Dizziness;
*Tingling or pain in parts of your body.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the most common degenerative disease of the motor neuron system. Although ALS is incurable and fatal, with median survival of 3 years, treatment can extend the length and meaningful quality of life for patients

Diagnosis and treatment
The diagnosis of ALS is primarily clinical. Electrodiagnostic testing contributes to the diagnostic accuracy. Making a diagnosis is important to patients and families, allowing them to stop the search for alternative causes of a patient's disability and to focus their attention on treatment.
