Hundreds of protesters are expected to converge on Thursday, June 4 (today), in Benin City to show solidarity, in response to the alleged rape and murder of Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, a first-year Microbiology student of the University of Benin.

The solidarity march is being organised by the UNIBEN Students’ Union Government (SUG), in collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) led by the National President, Danielson Bamidele Akpan.

Other bodies joining in solidarity include, the UNIBEN Comrades Community (UCC), National Association of Edo State Students (NAESS), National Union of Benin Students (NUBS), Nigerian Students and Youth Association (NISAYA), National Association of University Students (NAUS), among others.

A statement issued late Wednesday by the UNIBEN SUG, called on all students, SUG senators, NANS comrades, University comrades, and other concerned individuals “that wants justice for late Miss Vera Uwaila (sic)”, to join in the “peaceful demonstration” demanding justice for the deceased.

“We want to urge everyone, that it’s important we come out in our numbers. This is because we will be pushing for Justice for the deceased, and also that such a heinous crime like this should not repeat itself in the Institution, State, Nation and Globally,” the statement issued through the Union spokesman, Destiny Uanzekin, added.

According to the Union spokesman, those expected in the solidarity march are to converge at the University maingate, Ugbowo campus, at 7am. They are also expected to be in black, signifying mourning. The protest will also call for an end to gender-based violence; rape and murder.

On security concerns, amid the growing security challenges in Edo, the Union said the Department of State Security Service (DSS), and the Edo State Police Command had assured the protesters of “adequate security coverage.”

“It’s pertinent to state, that there is no cause for alarm for tomorrow's solidarity march. This is because the Commissioner of Police, has also assured us of security personnels (sic) that will be on ground. Security is beefed up since we will be having the DSS and the Police.”

The statement, while assuring of free transportation, otherwise known as mobility for students in Ekehuan campus, advised all those joining in the solidarity march to come with their nose masks as Coronavirus measures.

“In addition, we want to urge everyone to please come with their nose masks. And also the Golden Age Executives will station Buses at Ekehuan Campus by 6:30am to convey students to the venue.”

Meanwhile, some officials of the UNIBEN SUG, in company of NANS president were, on Wednesday, at the home of the late student to condole with the bereaved family, over the death of their daughter, Miss Uwa.

“The NANS President in his bid to consolidating the efforts of the Union, visited the family of Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa and on our visit, a token was given to the family to show our solidarity support.”

The newly redeployed Commissioner of Police in Edo, Johnson Babatunde Kokumo was said to have also paid a visit to the bereaved family as “his first assignment”, upon resumption of office, assuring of justice for Uwa.

“In doing this, the CP requested the leadership of the Students' Union Government, in company of the NANS President and his entourage. On the visit to the family, the CP sympathized with the family and assured them that Justice must be served in this case soonest.”

Earlier, the SUG led by its President, Egwu Benjamin Lotana and Senate President, Benjamin Oyemwense; in company of NANS President were at DSS Benin zonal office, where security coverage assurance was secured for the planned march.

This doesn't stop rape infact the perpetrators might join in the movement, my take is let us tackle the problem from the root cause. Let there be a revolution against pornographic materials on the internet, educate the male gender on ways of seeing females as humans with equal dignity as theirs not as a sexual object for pleasure only, train our ladies Kung Fu useful in defending themselves from physical harassment, enhance and educate our law enforcement officers in forensics and use of technology in detecting these crimes any where it is perpetrated, young girls of age 0_7 years should be laced with computer chips useful in monitoring them by mothers at home or wherever they may be with this and many more modern technological ideas we will successfully refuce if not eradicate Rape in our society.

#JusticeForUwa.

All rapists should be sentenced to DEATH....after adequate and thorough investigation.
There should be no 2 ways about it.
This will deter some dogs from raping our

We understand that there is a national outrage in the wake of the sad incident involving Uwa.
People are angry.
Personally, we are livid.
But the anger should be directed at creating a solution. Changing the existing legislation, awareness on rape and most importantly; everyone needs to create that safe environment for girls/women.

If you hear a troubling sound from your neighbour, knock on that door and ask questions.
If you see a man or a boy getting too cozy with a little girl; poke your nose in the matter. In fact, your little “amebo” could help prevent rape or molestation.

Parents, take time to talk to your sons and male wards that a girl’s body is her absolute right with her total discretion on whom and when to give.
Consent is hers to give.

Also, parents, you should be your daughters’ confidant. Let her be able to talk to you. Father, sex talk with your daughter is not gross. Let her be able to talk to you.

There is nothing like settling it within the family. If punishing perpetrators of rape would shatter the family, then let it be.
If the animal had thought about the family, he would not have done it.

The only hope would be that we would not have to wait until tragedy strikes again; before raising a voice.
No one should be able to get away with rape.

ALL OF US @ SAY NO TO RAPE over and over again!!

And as we are SAYING NO TO RAPE, WE ALSO SAY NO TO FALSE ACCUSATIONS OF RAPE.
They are both as DANGEROUS as one another
!

Good gestures

But when are we going to march against bad and recycled leadership and political goddatherism

When will vote buying stop?

When will police brutality stop?

When will rape stop??

When will banditry and herdsmen killing stop

When will lopsided northern political appointments stop??

When are we going to march against bad health care systems, bad roads and bad schools

When will Nigeria stand up to it's full potentials??

Ok but practice social distancing and wear a face mask , please oga coro will not understand your good intentions... Yet the root of this terrible occurrence should be tackled, our girls should avoid lonely places, or better since they should have at least two persons around them, like wise in the night and most especially families must begin to teach our children good morals at home, when godly men are out here they avoiding sexual immorality even when some vain women is trying to seduce them cos of fear of God, this fools are forcing themselves on people who is not even interested in having sex with them, this is very insane and terrible... U should treat a woman the same way we treat our mum, sister and daughters cos they are actually someone daughter, mum and sister

Hopefully more groups protest until the leaders/politicians/lawmakers get the message and put laws in place to investigate, prosecute and set harsh convictions for rapists.

This is not necessary, the real rapist we are having are our political leaders who have been busy raping us since before 1960 to now and they are bent on continuing in the sch of raping the masses.

Where is the money meant for palliatives or how many people got it?

Where are the money donated?

What is the essence of borrowing money at this time and using the other side of the mouth to cry for debt forgiveness?

See the way jamb has bn designed to be remitting money made from the masses in pursuance of educational goals to govt. If education supposed to be an avenue for generating revenue?

Where are the good roads we always dream about?

Some states just got a refund for the money spent on the repair of federal roads, what is the condition of those roads as at today?

Security at zero level, are we not the one that still pay for security in our streets, communities, etc?

No good provision for our health

Etc

They live as a demi god

Nice gesture, this reminds me of the peaceful protest we engaged in back then in uniben over the brutal killing of a student by soldiers way back 2015.
