Hmmm. I doubt if Buhari would want to nominate a former member of GEJ's cabinet. If it's true, then congratulations to her. But why should we continue to recycle same individuals for so many years?

What about Akinwumi Adesina?

We just have to present a more sellable candidate. Who is more sellable than Okonjo Iweala for now?
Definitely “same individuals” that have greatly excelled globally.

If true then Gambari get sense. IBB goofed by choosing Obasanjo as UN secretary General candidate back then. Boutros Boutros Ghalli and Egypt snatched the opportunity. Joe Garba would have been the right candidate. Or even Wole Soyinka.

Obasanjo speaks only English as international language. Rushing to Paris to learn French was not enough for OBJ to be taken seriously then.

Kudos to the president for this kind gesture. At least, Igbos can now let us rest on this forum. Those among them praying for the downfall of Adesina simply because he’s from the south west can now get preoccupied with praying for their Igbo daughter’s success.

I can also bet nobody will talk about nepotism on this thread. The fact that the president withdrew support from Yonov Agah, a Nigerian from the north central and now supports an Igbo lady should not go unnoticed. If it was the other way round, the fury of hell fire would be a child’s play to what they would bring down tonight. I wish her the best in the election.

What a shame. So what do you think? Between Okonjo Iweala and Agah, who has better chances? Between Okonjo Iweala and South West candidates including Adesina who has better chances to secure the seat for Nigeria?

My friend in arriving at that conclusion, the APC led government weighed its chances and looked at opportunities available for Nigeria in WTO? Look there was no way the government would make the wrong choice and risk looking such an important opportunity to another country.

Okonjo Iweala's credentials intimidate the biggest names in the federal cabinet. She has connections with presidents and leaders in the economies of other countries. Buhari cannot have such an opportunity to work with such a person - he has been looking for it since the inception of APC government - and lose it.

She will get the seat by the grace of God.

kahal29:
President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the nomination of Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, former coordinating minister for the economy, for the position of director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), TheCable can report.

In a document seen by TheCable on Thursday, Buhari withdrew the candidacy of Yonov Frederick Agah, Nigeria’s permanent representative to WTO, for the same position.

The election is scheduled to hold in Geneva, Switzerland in 2021 for a four-year term that would run from 2021 to 2025 after Roberto Azevedo, former director-general of the organisation stepped down a year to the end of his second term.

“The embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and permanent mission to the African Union (AU) and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) presents compliments to all embassies and permanent missions in Addis Ababa and has the honour to inform that the Federal Government of Nigeria has withdrawn the candidacy of Ambassador Yonov Frederick Agah for election to the position of director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO),” the letter seen by TheCable read.

“Nigeria is therefore pleased to request the support of esteemed AU member states as well as permanent missions and embassies in Addis Ababa in favour of the candidacy of Okonjo-Iweala.”

Agah is Nigeria’s permanent representative to the WTO and WTO’s deputy director-general.

Okonjo-Iweala currently chairs the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), a public-private global health partnership with the goal of increasing access to immunisation in poor countries.

She also sits on the board of Twitter and is a former managing director (operations) at the World Bank.

On March 7, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa appointed her a member of the country’s economic advisory council.

A month later on April 10, Kristalina Georgieva, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), named Okonjo-Iweala a member of the fund’s external advisory group.

Okonjo-Iweala is one of the four special envoys appointed by the African Union (AU) on April 12 to mobilise international support for its efforts toward addressing the coronavirus pandemic.

In 2012, she contested to become World Bank president becoming the first female and first black candidate.

She was listed among one of the top 100 most powerful women in the world by Forbes four consecutive times from 2011 to 2014. She was also listed as one of the top 100 most influential people in the world by TIME magazine in 2014.
