The society that we live in is divided into 3 types of people. The philosopher kings(the leaders), the Professionals(Doctors, lawyers, Engrs, shoe makers etc) and the auxiliaries (military and paramilitary). While the philosopher kings directs the affair of the society, the professional are changing the world, helping philosopher kings to establish the society. The auxiliaries works for the philosopher kings without need for questions. That is why they say that soldiers obey the last command.

Within the military, they are blessed and talented differently. While Buhari could defeat any foe in a war as a soldier, he lacks the superior Machiavellian intellect that should establish him as a military leader. That was why it did not take Ibrahim Babangida and Col Sambo Dasuki much to overthrow him on 27th August, 1985. Same would have been a different story if Idiagbon was in the country. That was why Buhari was able to defeat Maitastine. Maitastine was Muslim immigrant from cameroun, he was an extremist who killed ‘unbelievers’ especially those of Igbo decent. While Sani Abacha knows what it takes to seat and unseat any government, he is not brilliant ‘upstairs’. Sani Abacha was the brain behind the defeat of all coups plotted to unseat Ibrahim Babangida while he was in power (1985-1993). All these happen within the military milieu, it is almost impossible for a soldier to be an auxiliary and a philosopher king. One of such soldier who was philosopher king and auxiliary was Thomas Sankara. The next closest to him is Ndubuisi Kanu.

Ndubuisi Kanu was a Nigerian of Igbo decent recruited into Nigerian navy in 1962.While the rift between the south and northern Nigeria was widening, he was in kidney island trying to get one or two degrees in military. While the world and Africans was trying to bridge the lacuna between the North-south dichotomy,he was also being promoted. As it was the case before the war in Nigeria, southern soldiers was posted in South while northern soldiers were posted similarly in the North. This is one of the major things that made the war very easy to start because Gowon and Ojukwu was commanding officers loyal to it’s land. Ndubuisi Kanu came back from Kidney island to defend his motherland. He was posted to command the Navy in Bonny river.

The first time that he went to war front, his former friends in the force who are now arch enemies saw him and called out ‘101’. Ndubuisi Kanu and his troop opened fire on the Nigerian soldiers leaving no soul alive. This is like any other soldier who has sworn absolute loyalty to service. Throughout the war Ndubuisi Kanu maintained upper hand against his enemies even when he lacked what arms. ‘Newstand Historians’ and Historians at ‘Ogorogo joint’ claimed that when Ndubuisi Kanu and his men are about to engage their enemies,he would stand up and be waving his hand shouting ‘not for me and my people’. As that goes, bullets does not come close to him and troops under him. Because of this, many navy officers cherished fighting alongside him. While this cannot be verified for academic, scholarly and objective examination, it is worthy of note that in PJ Odu’s 2009 book: the future that varnished, Ndubuisi Kanu maintained upper hand against his enemy throughout the war. Even when Mbaise was captured by Federal troops, Ndubuisi Kanu was still fighting with valour and having meeting on the next possible line of action as the situation was becoming bad for Biafrian soldiers. Owerri fell to federal troops on 8th January, 1970, and Ojukwu was on his way out of Biafra. The war ended on 15th January, 1970. When the war ended, Ndubuisi Kanu has not got information and was still putting the little resources(arms) that they had left to good use. He was in atani before moving to uli where they were planning on the next possible actions since the war has ended.

Sequel to the war, Ndubuisi Kanu became a taxi driver before he was reabsorbed into Nigerian navy. When he rejoined his now former country,he found out that his juniors have been promoted above him. Ndubuisi Kanu refused to acknowledge them as his superior. He fought civilly for what was due to him arguing that he is soldier who fought and defended the region he was posted prequel to war. He won and was promoted appropriately. In 1975, he was the only Igbo that was appointed into the supreme military council(SMC) before Obasanjo dissolved it when he assumed office in 1976. Ndubuisi Kanu was appointed the military head of imo state in 1975 before he was transferred to be governor of Lagos State in 1976. While many Biafrian soldiers swore never to serve Nigeria again, Ndubuisi Kanu fought civilly and was reabsorbed as a Nigerian in all essence and quiddity.
If you are coming from computer Village, heading toward Awolowo way, Anifowose, right in the round about in Ikeja under bridge where they drew past Governors of Lagos State, you will see him as the only Igbo governor of Lagos State, emblazoned in his full military regalia.

When he retired from service, he joined civil struggle. He was a frontier member of National Democracy coalition (NaDeCo) who wanted the June 12, 1993 election restored and power given to MKO Abiola. In 1998 when two young men presented his autobiography to him, they titled it power with civility, Ndubuisi Kanu argued with them feverntly saying the title is supposed to be Service with civility, he lost the argument as the two brilliant young men called it their poetic license.

Ndubuisi Kanu is still alive today. He has many honor both traditionally and academically to his name. The late Pericomo Okoye, the former traditional prime minister of Arondizuogu did a song for him in his honour and veneration. Ndubuisi Kanu is a classic example of soldier who fought, did not run and lived to fight again.

THE BIG QUESTION
What could have happened if we Igbos fought like Ndubuisi Kanu in our agitation for Biafra. Where could we have gotten if we forgot past in the past and joined Nigeria, could we have been accepted back and forgiven like Ndubuisi Kanu was forgiven? Could we achieve more if we stop this agitation for a moment? What does the creation of Biafra pose for us?

I quoted them and refuted their claim because it is not verifiable. But a verifiable source also asserted something similar to that. You should read that paragraph again.

It is ridiculous and unbelievable, why would Nigeria be calling 101? why would he drop his gun and bullet will be flying and will not touch him. Was he a good soldier? Maybe but let's not kid ourselves this story is exaggerated

After the war ended in 1970, there was no agitation for Biafra for 30 years. The agitation for Biafra started again in 1999 with Uwazurike and MASSOB. In that 30 years Igbos were not made to feel they belong to Nigeria.
