Anambra community protests abduction of Chimamanda Adichie's kinsman by police


The kinsmen of a famous writer, Chimamanda Adichie of Abba community in the Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State on Saturday protested the arrest of the Chief Executive Officer of Best Aluminum Manufacturing Company, Pius Nweke, by the police.

The police had on Friday arrested and paraded Nweke in handcuffs at the Onitsha Central Police Station for alleged possession of unlicensed firearm.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, John Abang had told our correspondent that “policemen of the Inspector General of Police’s Special Tactical Squad while on routine patrol at Awada( Onitsha area) saw and intercepted a Lexus Jeep which its number plate was covered and then searched the car and the occupant and in the process found a barreta pistol with 10 rounds of ammunition and on interrogation, the fellow who was in the car who owns the pistol is one Mr Pius Nweke.

“He has been taken into custody for further interrogation at Onitsha there with STS. He will be taken to Abuja because the STS headquarters is in Abuja. So, definitely he will be moved to Abuja for further necessary actions and interrogations.

Abba and its neighbour Ukpo in the Dunukofia Local Government Area had been having dispute over land for over the years.

Drescibing her community as being under siege, Adichie had several times accused a certain oil magnate in Ukpo, of using the police to terrorise her people and usurping their land.


Protesting on Saturday, the community alleged that the businessman was arrested because he had been a strong voice against the intimidation of the people of the area.


The spokesperson for the community, Bennett Anaekwe said "At about 12 noon on Friday, information filtered in of the abduction of Chief Pius Nweke on his way to his office by of the Nigeria Police Force.

"It was confirmed that Chief Nweke was abducted by the men of the Nigeria police when his pictures in handcuffs with a gun in a background of a police station started circulating online.

" The whereabouts of Chief Nweke is still unknown. It should be recalled the Abba community has been in dispute over ownership of a large expanse of land commonly called "Agu-Abba" with her neighbouring Ukpo community for which the Nigeria police was enlisted against the Abba community by Prince Arthur Eze.
He said since June, 2019 the people of the community had been subjected to police intimidation, harassment and victimization with not less than 19 citizens of the Abba community charged to courts for offences ranging from obstruction to armed robbery.

He added,"At present, two out of the five persons arrested on 18th December, 2019 in the Magistrate's Court, Umudioka are still in the facility of the Nigeria Correctional Service.

"The Abba community hereby places the world on notice that should anything happen to Chief Pius Nweke, the Nigeria police under IGP Mohammed Adamu and Prince Arthur Eze are to be held responsible.

"The Nigeria police should not reduce itself to a private thug. President MohammaduBuhari is called upon to save the Abba community from the Nigerian police.

This kind of intimidation when not with any political position so if by chance he become a president tomorrow he will turn to a tyrant? how can a billionaire and multi company owner won't be able to acquire a gun license?
