Cover letters are detailed documents every job seeker should send with his/her CV or resume to provide recruiters with more information on their skills and experience. It explains why the job seeker is qualified for the job.

If you are actively seeking and applying for jobs, you will find that a lot of recruiters ask for cover letters alongside CVs/resumes for every job application. Although, not every job advert asks for a cover letter, but, it is very important to write one. This is because, it is an opportunity for you to sell yourself to the recruiter and convince him/her to review your CV, to know if you are a good fit for the specified job role.

When you are writing cover letters, make sure you refrain from repeating all the information you have on your CV. The requirement for an excellent cover letter, is that you sell your skills and abilities in relation to the job role you are applying for.

Write your cover letters in ways that make the recruiter to want to know you better. It is alright to make use of online cover letter generators, however, note that thousands of others are using the same format, so, always edit your sentences, so your letter looks different from the generic ones out there.

Use the following guidelines if you are planning on writing one for a job application;

The cover letter should lend some support to your application, not a repetition of the information in your CV/resume.

Do not write about your hobbies or any challenges you may be going through as reasons for wanting the specified job.

If you are actively applying for jobs, avoid using the same cover letter you used to apply to Company A for Company B.

Use keywords when writing cover letters. You can identify keywords from the job description. Take note of these keywords and use them in your cover letter, while articulating your skills, so, the recruiter will know you are up to the task.

Do not allow the letter to be too lengthy. Keep it to a page.

If there is one skill you do not have in relation to the role, do not address it in your letter. Instead, write about your proficiency in other listed skills.
