The history of the Nigerian press has very interesting highlights which provide an easy way to understanding the trends on how the media evolved. After the emergence of Iweh Irohin newspaper established by Rev. Henry Townsend in 1859, many other newspapers gradually sprang up in the media landscape at that time to pave way for the vibrant media sector we have in the country today. The quickest way to get a picture of the evolution of the Nigerian press is to look at what characterized the media landscape at the early stages of the industry’s development.
