On 8 June 2020, it was 22 years that General Sani Abacha, Nigeria’s former Head of State, died. He ascended the “throne” when he shoved the Interim National Government, headed by Chief Ernest Shonekan, aside. Shonekan himself ruled after General Ibrahim Babangida annulled the 12 June, 1993 presidential election, won by Chief M.K.O Abiola.

However, what was not clear to many Nigerians was that the cancellation of the election, coming into power of Shonekan and emergence of Abacha were all choreographed by Babangida, the master dribbler.
This was revealed in The Tale Of June 12: The Betrayal Of The Democratic Rights of Nigerians by Professor Omo Omoruyi.

Babangida was quoted: ”Where do I go from here? They do not trust me. Without Sani (Abacha), I will not be alive today; without the North, I would not have become an officer in the Nigerian Army and now the President of Nigeria I don’t want to appear ungrateful to Sani; he may not be bright upstairs but he knows how to overthrow governments and overpower coup plotters. He saw to my coming to office in 1985 and to my protection in the many coups I faced in the past, especially the Orkar coup of 1990 where he saved me and my family including my infant daughter.”

”Sani risked his life to get me into office in 1983 and 1985; if he says he does not want Chief Abiola, I will not force Chief Abiola on him.”

General Ibrahim Babangida has explained the reason he annulled the June 12, 1993 presidential election which was won by the late Chief MKO Abiola. On June 12, that is next month’s, Nigeria will mark it as Democracy Day again.

Babangida said: They will kill me; they will kill the President Elect, Chief MKO Abiola if I went ahead with the election and announced the winner of the elections which we all know to be Bashorun, Chief MKO Abiola.
”I know so; I am not daft. He won; he tried. I feel bad about the whole matter. Professor, I do not see how they will spare you because they know you are my principal confidant. You think they do not know you? They know; they know you are with me now. They saw you coming in and they know you are with me now I cannot kill myself for the sake of what the country wants. I am sorry,” IBB lamented. It was astonishing to hear a General stating that he could not lay down his life for his country.

It was clear that General Babangida was in a fix as of June 21st 1993. I then proceeded to deal with the questions of who were these “they” and for what reasons would they want to kill the President and the President Elect if the June 12 election were allowed to go forward. He named them in military and in ethnic categories:

”Sani (meaning General Sani Abacha) is opposed to a return to civilian rule. Sani cannot stand the idea of Chief Abiola, a Yoruba becoming his Commander- in- Chief; Sani seems to have the ears of the Norhern leaders that no Southerner especially from the South West should become the President of the country. Sani seems to rally the Northern elders to confront me on the matter. He is winning; the Sultan and the Northern leaders are of this frame of mind.”

”Where do I go from here? They do not trust me. Without Sani, I will not be alive today; without the North, I would not have become an officer in the Nigerian Army and now the President of Nigeria I don’t want to appear ungrateful to Sani; he may not be bright upstairs but he knows how to overthrow governments and overpower coup plotters.

He also named Lt General Dongoyaro and Brigadier General David Mark as those who were against Chief Abiola. In fact, he quoted David Mark as saying: I’d shoot Chief Abiola the day NEC( National Electoral Commission) pronounces him the elected President!

IBB was just a coward angry

If he really wanted to protect the Democratic freedom of the Nigerian State and his personal integrity, he should have simply retired those senior officers ahead of time who were like bone in the flesh.

Another escape route would have been to plot a mini-coupe with some G7 countries by secretly exposing the intentions of some powerful individuals in the kitchen cabinet, to mount tremendous pressure on Nigeria with severe threats and consequences when he halts/ suspends the announcement of the election results.

Meanwhile, he will only halt the announcement of results citing some reasonable reasons but NOT to annule it at the onset. With the pressures coming in, he will bulge and complete the election. In anyway, he must retire some officers.

His cowardice and lack of faith for a great and prosperous nation beclouded his vision. Nigeria is greater than the interest of a single individual.

Infact, there are numerous ways to have come out of it clean kiss

Sani Abacha will forever remain a hero to the north. He was the only thing standing btwn us and the entitlement of the south to rule over us.

He said he owes his being alive today to Abacha.

He may be wrong to have annulled the election, but many people will do the same thing just to favour a man who saved their life and those of their family.

Which way Nigeria?

The gullible south believed in one nigeria,
But the North, They have never believed in the south.
The only need they have of the South is for nominal considerations, just for nationhood.

A Flip side also reveals that the teeming population across the ethnic divide innocently voted for MKO, while the elitist group plotted against the choice of the masses. Then thereafter proceeded to stealthily sowing seeds of discord to entrench their evil.

THE ELITES HAVE BEEN FEEDING FAT ON OUR DISUNITY , WHILE WE GLEEFULLY TAG ALONG

IBB did alot of disservice to himself and Nigeria by the annulment of that election.

He should have called the Ambassadors and High Commissioner of USA, UK, Russia, Canada and Germany to a meeting at Abuja informed them and sought their support about his decision to announce the results of the election in their presence , immediate retirement of Abacha, Dogoyaro, David Mark and other Military that are posing threats to the transition to democratic rule.
