Moscow bombing: Carnage at Russia's Domodedovo airport Moscow bombing: Carnage at Russia's Domodedovo airport Scene at Domodedovo airport, Russia, 24 January 2011 Reports say the blast happened in the international arrivals area of Domodedovo airport Continue reading the main story Related stories * Live: Moscow airport blast * Search for Moscow blast Britons Moscow's Domodedovo airport has been rocked by a bomb explosion that an airport spokesman says has killed 35 people. More than 100 people were injured - 20 of them critically - by the blast, which reports suggest was the work of a suicide bomber. Russia's chief investigator said terrorists were behind the attack. The airport - the busiest serving Russia's capital - is 40km (25 miles) south-east of the city centre. President Dmitry Medvedev vowed those behind the attack would be tracked down. He ordered increased security across Russia's capital, its airports and other transport hubs, and called an emergency meeting with top officials. He also postponed his planned departure for this week's World Economic Forum at Davos. BBC security correspondent Gordon Corera said immediate suspicion about Monday's attack would fall on militants from the Caucasus region. Last March the Russian capital's underground system was rocked by two female suicide bombers from Russia's volatile Dagestan region, who detonated their explosives on the busy metro system during rush hour, killing 40 people and injuring more than 80. 'Almighty explosion' Reports suggest Monday's blast at Domodedovo hit the baggage reclaim area of the international arrivals hall, creating a cloud of smoke. The device is thought to have contained the equivalent of 7kg of TNT. Briton Mark Green, who was on a British Airways flight that landed at the airport before the explosion, told BBC News there were thousands of people in the baggage collection area, baggage hall and queue for immigration at the time of the blast. "We were walking out through the exit of the arrivals hall towards the car, and there was this almighty explosion, a huge bang, my colleague and I looked at each other and said 'Christ that sounds like a car bomb or something,' because the noise was, literally, it shook you," Mr Green told BBC News. He described scenes of panic and how he gave a drink of water to a bloodied Russian man whose face was blackened with soot. He said: "After previous similar events, we passed appropriate legislation, and we have to check how it has been applied. Because obviously there have been lapses, and we have to get to the bottom of this." Police are hunting for three suspects in connection with the bombing, Russian media report. All flights from Domodedovo have been suspended since the blast, while incoming flights are being diverted to Moscow's Sheremetevo airport. Nato has sent a message of solidarity to Russia's government. UK Foreign Secretary William Hague sent the condolences of the British government to all those who had lost relatives and been injured. "British officials are in urgent contact with the Russian authorities to establish the facts and to provide consular support to any British nationals who may have been affected," said Mr Hague. |

^^^^^^ Because terrorism is a global phenomenon and Nigerian security services, like we all know them, are in shambles. |

Look plain and simple Russia needs to let Chechnya be its own country and stop holding then against their will like slaves. If this happens, the bombing nonsense will stop. |

ikay88: By this, you are inferring that those responsible for previous the bomb blasts in Nigeria were not smart enough to position such blast for maximum damage, and this Moscow event will open the floodgate?. . . .like seriously? You seriously think someone who planned and executed a successful twin blast at the Eagles Square must not have thought about detonating one at the airport?. . . perhaps those responsible for Nigerian bombings were not interested in maximum damage and were only looking to make political statements. . .No? I fail to see how a bombing event in Moscow has a direct correlation with the ones in Nigeria, terrorism as well as Islamic extremism is a global thing, and what happened in Moscow wouldn't necessarily single out Nigeria for future attacks. |

Ola edo: Those Chechens do not play. They are very brutal. However, the Russians have no qualms destroying an entire village or city. The Russians know how to bring a sledgehammer. |

EzeUche_: The thing is Russia is too big to secure all of its area. Also, the Chechens are using guerilla warfare, which is a very powerful tool in getting what they want.If nigeria was to go into civil war now, the best way to defeat the army/government and split would be through guerrilla warfare. That is of course if things get that bad. |

Ola edo: Russia will not allow Chechnya to go on its own. If the Russians allow the Chechens to have their independence, then the Russians will have to worry about 10-20 other regions who may want to have their independence. The Russians already believe that they have given up to much land since the fall of the Soviet Union. I am pretty sure the Russians will respond with a heavy hand, once the dust settles. |

Anyone who thinks these are isolated events, is simply deceiving himself/herself. Following countries in the past year have suffered terrorist attacks. 1. Pakistan. 2. Iraq 3. Egypt 4. Iran 5. Nigeria 6. Russia 7. Thailand 8. Phillipines 9. Somalia 10. Yemen 11. Sweden 12. India 13. Kenya 14. Algeria 15. Saudi Arabia 16. Indonesia 17. Uganda 18. Thailand 19. Bosnia 20. Ukraine 21. Israel 22. Turkey 23. USA 24. Germany and the list goes on. What on earth is wrong with these people ? If the Nigerian security forces do not get their act together SOON , its only a matter of time before we witness a massive loss of lives. |
