Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has granted amnesty to 28 inmates of the Nigeria Correctional Custodial Centres in the state.

Olusegun Ajiboye, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, in a statement in Akure on Thursday, said the gesture was in commemoration of the 2020 Democracy Day celebrated on June 12.

Mr Ajiboye said this was in exercise of the powers conferred on the governor by Paragraph (d) of sub-section (1) of Section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended.

“Governor Akeredolu ordered that 13 of the inmates be discharged out of the facility accordingly and forthwith.

“While 10 on death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment and 5 on life imprisonment were commuted to various terms of imprisonment.

“The 13 inmates serving various terms of imprisonment were pardoned, having served substantial portions of their sentences.

“In the same vein, the 10 condemned inmates had been duly convicted and sentenced to death by hanging, while 5 were equally, duly convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment,” he said.

Mr Ajiboye further said Mr Akeredolu advised the pardoned inmates to make good use of the opportunity offered them by their release to turn a new leaf and abandon a life of crime.

But if you forgive someone for something they did to you, it doesn’t mean you agree with what they did or believe it was right. Forgiving that person means you have chosen not to dwell on the matter anymore; you have moved on with your life.

Good gesture. But hope those ones sentenced to death before they were pardoned were not people that have taken innocent lives. Those that have taken innocent lives actually deserve death. This kind of gesture should only be extended to those that are imprisoned for false allegation.

Capital punishment is barbaric. Why should any sane country still kill people in the 21st century?

The death penalty is just state-sponsored murder.

Good one from own of the best performing Governors in Nigeria.

Our darling Wailers,
this right here is for you guys and the people that have brainwashed you tongue.......

When Buhari agreed to pay 88billion compensation to Biafrans victims, granted autonomy to state judiciary, supports local government autonomy, recognised MKO and June 12 they say it is politics. (And like the daughter of our hero of democracy said, if Buhari does not play politics, should he play chemistry?)

More criminals being released into the society.

With the upsurge in crime, nobody with crime history (especially prisoners) should be pardoned.

Those guys just don't repent.

When push comes to shove, they'll always go back to their first love, which is crime.

I fvcking hate criminals

good sir....mks me rember what happened early last year..a close friend jide was released from prison after spending 4 yrs in panti jus because of false aligation...we all went to a nearby street to play ball n he decided to join a strang guy he saw to smoke weed after the ball why we all left for home, only to hear dt police don carry jide along with that guy because that guy killed someone in a street clash jus some months back and they thought jide was part of his gang...we all went to the station did statement and try to beg and bail jide bt police refused, they said its murder case and he av been transfered to panti and would face trial the next week, "the straw that broke the camel back" about that case was wen the said guy died in prison due to previous untreated gunshot wound which means that jide was screwed up because we pleaded with the guy and he promised to convince the officers dt jide was innocent and he didnt b4 he died,.....jide went to court and was given 15yrs imprisonment and i remember hearing that loud scream of pain from jide and tears and sorrows from his mum and wife dt rainy friday evening.....early last year jide returned bk home on a sunday mornin and said dt he was exonerated after 4yrs and we were all happy seeing the lanky and haggard looking jide but the breaking part of it was when he heard dt his mother av passed on due to heart failures a year before but i think the worst was when they told him that his wife was married with kids to another man IN THE SAME STREET, he broke down in tears, was depressed and threatened to kill both and go back to jail but we tried talking to him and assisted him financially.....last i heard abt him last month was that he is currently working in the vineyard as a cleaner in a nearby church, afterall vengeance is of the LORD and KARMA is real....
