Have you made up your mind to study in Canada? If you have taken this decision, you must know the real difference between a college and university in Canada.

If you have good reasons for a College degree, fine. If yours is for University, fine as well. The discrimination between the two institution in Canada is not as pronounced as in most African countries

So the basic difference between a college and a university in Canada are:

1) Colleges can be described as career oriented centers in their scope compared to universities. What does it mean? It clearly implies that they provide hands-on or practical training to the students.

You can come across a lot of colleges of applied arts and technology that offer part-time or full-time certificate and diploma courses. Several of them also provide Bachelor degrees in applied areas of study.

As far as a diploma program is concerned, it lasts 2 or three years and a certificate program normally lasts for 1 year or less. You can study courses that focus on skills upgrading, language training and pre-trades and apprenticeship training in Canadian colleges and there are institutions that concentrate on military programs, health science and agriculture as well.

Universities are more or less institutions that are authorized to offer degrees. All Canadian universities offer undergraduate and graduate programs including Master’s and Doctoral programs.

Universities can be described as independent entities to a great extent. Most of the universities get assistance in the form of funding from government agencies such as Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development, but they have self-governing powers.

The universities regulate their own programs and they have the freedom to decide on faculty and admissions as well. When it comes to full-time undergraduate programs, they generally last 3 to 4 years. If you are planning to go for a Master’s degree or a graduate program, you need an Honors degree (3-4 year undergraduate degree).

2) The fact of the matter is that colleges equip the students with the fundamental skills and knowledge about a specific subject or trade. The students can apply for some entry level and middle level jobs after the completion of a college program. If a student prefers a career that demands hands on training instead of academic training, he/she has to choose a college.

Universities focus more on academic studies and professional training. If the focus of a student is to widen the horizon of his/her own knowledge and take a professional degree, he/she needs to select a university. Many universities also offer professional programs, such as medicine, dentistry and law. In some cases, you can begin these programs after 2 or 3 years of undergraduate study.

3) Colleges typically grant Certificates, Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas and Post-graduate diplomas, and seldomly Bachelor's and post-Bachelor's degrees.

Universities grant Bachelor's degrees, Master's degree, Doctorates and Post-Docs, and seldomly certificates, diplomas and Post-graduate diplomas.

In conclusion, Many colleges and universities now work together, and have something called bridging programs, which is where you can either complete a college and university degree at the same time, or begin at college and finish at university.

Are you ready now to choose your choice canadian school in preparation for September 2020 admission?
