Over 50 million Nigerians are non-literate. The European Union and United Nations Spotlight Initiative “to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls in Nigeria” is leaving no one behind in times of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The radio programme “Literacy by Radio and Family Life and Health Education” is designed to fill this gap and to promote equal opportunity for women and girls in education. The programme is brought to you by Grassroots Entrepreneurship Skills Acquisition Initiative (GESA) supported by FCT department for Mass Education and National Mass Education Commission (NMEC) in Partnership with ASO Radio and Television Services Abuja.
It is funded by the European Union and United Nations Spotlight Initiative in Nigeria.
As the pandemic has continued to spread, schools are shutdown, face to face and classroom education is now impossible, so has the vulnerabilities of women and girls with a noticeable surge in cases of domestic and sexual abuse in the country. It has become most importance that the lives of women and girls are safeguarded during this critical period and focus is maintained on the country’s most vulnerable population by introducing the Radio Literacy Program to keep our learners informed, engaged and learning during this period of school closures.
