In my humble opinion, 'Sovereignty' of China to regulate affairs within its own space should be considered by the British government.

I understand the sentiment of UK, especially when you consider the fact that Hong Kong was once a British colony, but, that was then.

Note: Hong Kong isn't completely autonomous. It's still under the jurisdiction of the Chinese government
