Imagine you walk into an office for a job interview and you have not made any decision on what you want, you just need a job, any job. As you go into the office of the manager, he notices that you have a dour look on your face and your shoulders are slumped. He concludes in his mind that this person must be desperate for a job.

After exchanging greetings, he looks at you and asks you why you want this job. You look at him and after taking a deep breath, you say… “Sir, I have been job hunting for two years now and I have never landed a job. At this point, I am happy to do any job and I am hoping you will give me this job. I really need it.”

The manager will definitely take advantage of your desperation and give you an offer that is beneath you. That is human nature. It does not mean the person set out to take advantage of you but, you made it easy with your desperation.

This is the situation , a lot of job seekers have put themselves when it comes to job hunting, especially now that there is rise on unemployment figures on a global scale.

We had the opportunity of speaking with one manager who had spent about 21 years of his career, hiring people for all kinds of roles. He told us that confidence is what separates job seekers who want the job from those who will get the job.

Now, imagine if you walk into the office of the manager and you look sharp and calm, with your confidence in tact, and you answer questions based on the value you will bring to the company or organization, the manager has no choice but to hire you or at least, recommend you to be hired.

The only way you can have and exhibit such confidence is if you already have your own personal goals in mind. Have you ever seen a company or organization that is hiring tell applicants that they should just apply, without any specific details on what they are looking for? Impossible.

The HR manager in charge of placing vacancies, always has specified requirements for every job advert. This is the same way you should have your personal goals for the jobs you are applying to.

You should know your industry, the level you want, the pay/salary you want, the work periods you want, the work conditions you can tolerate and the ones you will not tolerate. Knowledge of all these will remove desperation and give you the confidence you need and will make any manager, who meets you, to accord you the respect you deserve without taking advantage of you.
