The leader of Coalition of Northern Groups, (CNG) Nastura Ashir Sharif has been released 48 hours after his arrest in Katsina for leading peaceful protest against killings in the north.

CNG Spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, in a statement said Sharif was released following the pressure from the CNG, the Northern Elders Forum, international media and among others.

He said: “The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) hereby confirms that Nastura Ashir Sharif, its chairman of the Board of Trustees has today been freed from a two-day police captivity.

“He was arrested Tuesday afternoon and moved to Abuja shortly after the peaceful protests in Katsina against the killings of helpless and defenceless citizens by bandits.

“We acknowledge that Sharif’s freedom was made possible by the enormous pressure exerted by the CNG, the Northern Elders Forum, patriotic leaders and elders of the North, a decent section of the civil society, a multi-sectoral cooperation of regional groups and activists and the vigilance of the national and international press.

“We equally appreciate the support, cooperation and patience of the entire northern public throughout the period of Shariff’s detention. This is indeed reassuring.

“We assure the public that we shall never relent in our struggle for a decent, free, fair and just society no matter the odds.

“We urge authorities to endeavour to always place value on human liberty and people’s rights as basic corner stones for civilized democracy,” Suleiman pleaded.

APC has ruined Nigeria to the ground! The times are startling.. Before Buhari became president, he was protesting every day and night swearing in bloody languages!

Nobody arrested him. Now he doesn’t want people to protest nor call out his name for a failure, dysfunctional yet ethnic bigoted goat that he is!

We have a long way to go in this country, so we can't protest under a democratic government? No human rights, no security, no proper infrastructure in place, no nothing, we the people need come together as one and take charge, make these people accountable else nothing is going to change for our children and children's children.

How can you arrest someone leading a peaceful protest against continual insecurity, killings,
maiming, loss of properties and livelihood in your own home state. To what end? People are being slaughtered like fowls.

An order you should be ashamed of issuing

Nobody is trying to oust you from your govt, keep your 80's coup d'etat paranoia to yourself.

This government is so inclined in destroying itself. They keep setting bad records. How can u claim to be democratic but hate criticism & protests with passion. Someone should enlighten this man, criticism & protests are part of democratic process. They'r ways used in check-mating a democratic government. Im sorry to say, buhari is not a democrat but a demorat!

Someone should please remind APC that they had numerous protest during the time they were an opposition party so they should accept the message and leave the messenger.

People protesting against insecurity which is one of the things to government swore to provide is very normal.

It is my belief that there is something in that ASO rock that makes leaders insensitive to the plight of the masses once these leaders ascend to that position.

Just imagine if a unknown gun came into aso rock and opened fire on the president's family. Would the leadership be speaking grammar and giving service chief last warnings?

This is what happens daily in Nigeria or is it that some people are more Nigerian than others

Its going to be a long three years.

Nor be them vote am in, wetin be my consign

A PEEEE CEEEE - CHAANGIII!

In other countries citizens carry out protest without being arrested, most protest are even violent ones e.g Blacklivesmatter protest in American. But in Nigeria you are in being arrested for exercising your civil rights and obligation and our government claims to be in a democratic dispensation .Oh what a country! Buhari you will come and go and you will become an ex president someday and an ordinary man walking and living in the midst of these same people you have failed to protect. May Allah judge you.

Haba bro, the government detainnig Soworo for months was very wrong which I condemned and wasn't happy about, but it's still does not justify anything. So because Soworo was detained for months, this man should also be detained for months? Instead of the citizens to think rationally we have allowed tribalism and bigotry fuel our mindset negatively. Why should an innocent Northern man suffer for Buharis actions. The northerners who buhari appointed to head various ministries and parastatals are only there for their selfish gains and that of their family. We should always condemn evil irrespective of tribe and religion.

Dont protest insecurity against govt. You claim to worship an all powerful yaweh or allah who you claim protects you but you won't blame your god when insecurity befalls you, you will rather blame govt. When you record a success you're quick to give your god the glory abandoning government its policies brought the success. if you blame govt for insecurity it means you admit there's no god who protects you so admit the shame that your holy books, pastors and imams have lied to you and accept collectively as a nation that there's no god and let's find means to protect ourselves. What use is your faith if it cannot guarantee security of your life? So if I'm president Nigerians must deny god existence and accept that I'm the one in charge then I can consider the protest and tighten the security architecture. But if a Christian or Muslim blame govt for insecurity it means an indirect admission that there's no god. Fuckin biitches
