The Nigeria Police Force has released Rotimi Jolayemi, the broadcaster who insulted the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed. Mr. Rotimi insulted the Minister in a song that went viral on social media.

Mr. Rotimi's wife, Dorcas, told The PUNCH that he was released on Friday evening after spending 45 days in police custody.

Mrs Dorcas thanked The PUNCH for facilitating the release of her husband who was detained illegally. However, they asked her husband to return on Monday to sign some papers.

Amnesty International had asked for Jolayemi's release but they detained him for more than 5 weeks before arraigning him in court on June 11, 2020.

On May 5, 2020, Jolayemi, who anchors a Yoruba radio programme, ‘Bi aye se ri’ on Osun State Broadcasting Service and Radio Kwara, was arrested by the police.

Before then, his wife and his two brothers were arrested and held for a week in police custody because Jolayemi had disappeared. However, after the journalist had turned himself in, they were released.
