RAPE

In recent times there have been several cases of rape in Nigeria and despite the increasing number of cases, we are yet to see any of the culprit punished or arrested, and this is a country with various security agencies.
I believe for sure that when one is not punished for an offence committed, there is tendency that theoffence will be committed again. Until we see those involved in this rape cases punished, arrested or even jailed for life, then we can say that our security agencies are doing something about it.

DEFINITION
Rape is a type of sexual assault usually involving sexual penetration carried out by physical force, coercion, or against a person who is incapable of giving valid consent such as ; one who is unconscious, incapacitated, has an intellectual disability or is below the legal age of consent.

MOTIVES
The world health organization states that the principal factors that lead to the perpetration of sexual violence including rape are
- people's belief
- Attitude of male sexual entitlement.
- weak legal sanctions.
*Other* *factors* *includes*;
- Anger
- power
- sadism

EFFECT OF RAPE
- Gynecological disorders
- sexual disorders
- Reproductive disorders
- unwanted pregnancy
- psychosomatic disorders
- Depression
- increased risk of suicide.
- sexually transmitted diseases
- post traumatic stress disorders
- mortality from injuries.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT
- physical examination including the genital tract/private part.
- Test to check for sexual transmitted infections.
- Treatment of minor injuries or brusies if present.
- post exposure prophylaxis ( this means giving the victim some retoviral/HIV drugs to help prevent HIV in case the rapist has the virus.)
- other medications to treat infection, reduce anxiety and to reduce pain
- The victim may need to be admitted in the hospital for close observation.

PREVENTION
- Health educate your children on sex education and other related information.
- Encourage them to speak up when they don't feel comfortable about the way an individual relates to them.
- Monitor your children closely and do not allow them visit friends and relatives you don't know very well.
- Caution them on how to relate with the domestic staff in the house.
- Above all pray for your children, both the younger ones and the older ones.

CONCLUSION
People who have been raped can be traumatized and may develop post traumatic stress disorder, serious injuries can result along with the risk of pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
Is not enough to carry placard With " say no to rape" written on it, if we cannot fish out the rapist from our communities, if the human rights activists do not follow up these rape cases, if the government is not doing anything to curb this menace, then the situation will continue and may even get worst.so let's start now to do something before is too late.
