Self-esteem is used to describe a person’s overall sense of self-worth or personal value. That is like asking, how much you appreciate and like yourself. It involves a variety of beliefs about yourself, such as the appraisal of your own appearance, beliefs, emotions, and behaviors.

As a professional, your self-esteem determines what happens to you along the journey of your career. Some career professionals make the mistake of allowing their positions at the time, to determine their self-esteem.

This means that if a young professional happens to have a job that pays them a lot of money and gives them the opportunity to meet a lot of VIPs, they tend to become snubs and look at everyone who do not have their kind of job as lazy or as liabilities – this is wrong.

On the other hand, some professionals who have low-paying jobs, also tend to see themselves as the runt of the litter, they have very low self-esteem, even though they may be smart and hard working. They tie their value to their jobs – this is also wrong.

Also, it is quite obvious that a lot of people who are on social media platforms, often tie their self-esteem to the number of followers they have. You may have seen some of them going to crazy lengths to get more followers.

They engage people in giveaways (even though they may be struggling financially in reality) and they even beg for followers! This is because they believe that they need lots of followers to feel good about themselves, but is this really true?

Your job or position should not determine your self-esteem, you are valuable and should always allow your actions and appearance show that. Build your confidence on your abilities, not on your job or social media followership.

This is because one day, you may not have that job or position anymore or you may no longer be available on your social media platform, so what happens to your self-esteem then?
