Chemical Engineering(finals) But I Have Interest In Data Science by KlausMichaelson: 2:44pm On Jun 23, 2020
Good day Nairalanders, I'm currently a final year student of a prestigious Federal University studying Chemical Engineering.

I have come to realize that I love Data Science and I will like to be a Data Scientist. This doesn't mean I regret studying Chemical Engineering. I love Chemical Engineering but I have more penchant for Data analysis of any sort.

Please advise me on how to go about this Career path of becoming a Data Scientist even tho my field of study is not related to it compared to the common ones like Computer Science, Statistics etc.

What courses should I be looking forward to in my Masters and PhD (God's grace) that will make me fit into a Data Scientist even though I have a background in Chemical Engineering.

NB: I have a Cgpa of about 4.3 and likely will be awarded the best graduating student. So changing my path is for no other reason than passion.

Thanks as I welcome your advices.

I am also a chemical engineer interested in Data science, unfortunately careerwise there is almost no relationship between both, except a complete career switch in my opinion. If you are good at using data science languages like Python and R, then you can go into Bioinformatics for a Masters and PhD, which would make your switch into Data Science easier.
The major option I see is to start from scratch and go into a complete switch in your masters degree by searching for Digital Engineering programs that admit engineers of all stripes.
However if we ignore our very little options careerwise, I believe we can also apply data science skills on chemical datasets found on Kaggle. One can also dabble into process control and statistics as a major elective in a chemical engineering Masters degree program.
Most chemical engineers use only excel and matlab for their data work, you could focus on those areas of chemical engineering as well.

Thanks for your advice Fellow Colleague. I'll consider Bioinformatics or the Digital Engineering. I'll check them out.
once again Thanks.
