iOS 14: Features, release date, how to install the beta, and everything else you need to know

iOS 14 was announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC 2020) on the 22nd of June. However, the tech giant is yet to mention when it would officially be rolling out this update on its devices.

As with many of their previous software rollout, this would be tied to the release of a new model. Speculations are rife that iPhone 12 won’t be released until October but iOS 14 will be available to users with iPhone 6s upwards.

Some features of this software update will include:

Home screen & interface changes: Bringing the customisation feel to the iPhone home screen as well as the App library feature that collages apps into categories with widgets coming in straight on the home screen.

Picture in picture: Allows you watch videos from apps directly on the home screen or if you want to multitask as you watch videos.

App store mini-apps: Allows you to download a small version of an app for test before a proper download, to be sure it is worth being in your library.

A whole new Siri interface

Siri’s full-screen takeover will finally become a thing of the past. When you trigger Siri in iOS 14, it will simply show the Siri “blob” at the bottom of your display,

Memoji updates

Apple’s not making any huge fundamental shifts with Memoji in iOS 14, but it’s adding a lot more options to make it easier to express yourself.

Car Keys

Apple’s one of the first to bring a standardized version of digital car keys to your iPhone (Manufacturers like Tesla have had their solutions for some time).

With it, you can use NFC to unlock your car and start it, and can share limited digital car keys with others through Messages

While a lot of iOS users expressed their anticipation on the release, Android users were quick to remind the iPhone counterparts that the cause of their excitement was already a feature on their devices as they berated iOS and Apple for coming on late.

Memoji updates

Apple’s not making any huge fundamental shifts with Memoji in iOS 14, but it’s adding a lot more options to make it easier to express yourself.

There are seven new hairstyles, 16 new pieces of headwear, three new memoji stickers, face coverings and an expanded range of ages.

Memoji have been refined with new facial and muscle structure to make them more expressive, too.

Car Keys

Apple’s one of the first to bring a standardized version of digital car keys to your iPhone (Manufacturers like Tesla have had their solutions for some time).

With it, you can use NFC to unlock your car and start it, and can share limited digital car keys with others through Messages (including keys with specific driver profiles). You can also easily remove keys from your phone should it get lost or stolen, or revoke “borrowed” keys send to friends or family.

You’ll need a new car to take advantage of this: BMW and Ford are on board, with other auto makers on the way. 

It is unclear if this is based on the Digital Key 2.0 standard agreed to by the Car Connectivity Consortium (of which Apple, BMW, and Ford are all members) or something new. Apple says it is working with standards bodies to bring this to additional cars.


AirPods improvements

If you have AirPods, you’ll love Apple’s new operating systems. AirPods will automatically switch between devices running iOS 14, iPadOS 14, watchOS 7, and macOS Big Sur. 

If you have AirPods Pro, you’ll be treated to new virtualized spatial audio for any source encoded in 5.1, 7.1, or Dolby Atmos. Apple uses motion detection to compare the movement of your head to the movement of your portable device in order to make sure the sound always stays oriented toward the screen, not to the way your head is facing.
